Do all 15-30 belt pulley slingers leak grease? We have 85-140 wt. lube in the gear case. The slinger is clean, but still leaks. Would we benefit by using straight 140 wt, or would it still leak, but just be harder to clean up? Our pulley turns, when the engine is running. Would it leak less, if we found a way to keep it from turning? Need to hear your experiences.

loren, ken is right on. seems like for the last couple of tractors, we haven't had one that leaks.for the ones that did, we had a machine shop turn out the cap so that we could put a seal in it that drove in from the outside. can't remember the size, but you can measure the shaft and then the machinist can figure out what he can cut out. find the seal before he cuts it out though. case/ ih does not have the original seal anymore and i haven't had to check rice yet. with the pulley turing it is somewhat hard to belt up.a little patience goes a long way on this. we have had some that don't turn, but i think the end play was too tight on them. ewald lofdahl tells me that heavy oil makes them turn more often, but he has cleaned them up real good in the past and still had them turn. sealing them off is the best in the long run. gaskets on all the casings are very inportant like hemiorange found out. i have a w-40 that the gasket for the belt pulley assembly must have slipped on me. it did not show up until we plowed with it this year, and oil comes out the clutch house hole in the belly. like ken said this will run oil continually and not return right. oil is expensive! will have to fix this in the winter. sorry for the long post.

Russ-You mention that "Case-IH doesn't have the origional seal". I'm a little confused. Are you talking about the seal for the belt pulley? I thought there was only a slinger, in there, until the machine shop cuts out the cap. Also, we have some oil coming out the bottom hole in the clutch housing, but thought probably that the rear main seal was the source. Is this possible? Thanks.-Loren

I would use straight 140. That's what I put in my 10-20. You will still get a little seepage but, not as much as you do with 85-140. You do not want to find a way to stop the pulley when the engine is running. With the pulley not in gear but slowly turning as the engine is running, the (slinger) actually pulls oil back into the gearbox. If you totally stop it from turning, it will leak more oil than it will if it turns.

When I restored my W30 if left the original gear oil in it while I put some hours on the tractor to see if anything leaked before I painted it. Everything seemed fine so I changed the oil to 85
-140 and painted it. Now everything seems to leak. I wish I had put 140 back in it. My 2 cents.

You have to hope Russ Hamm comes along. When it comes to 10-20s, 15-30s and 22-36s he has experience and good advice.
