The last few times I have been operating my 51 M, I have noticed that the temperature gauge only gets up to 110 degrees. This is even after it has ran for an hour. Any ideas on why I am not getting a normal reading & what should I check?

I just installed a new temp gauge on Dad's old '51 M two weeks ago. I was surprised the cooling system held EIGHT gallons. It takes a while to get those old Girls warmed up.

It does not sound like there is anything wrong.

I have an H that has to be hooked to the disk and run wide open for ten minutes before the needle gets into the 'run' range.

I've just had the same problem.I put in a new reproduction gauge in and I ran it for about a hour,it came up a little but it does work.My father who bought a M new in 1950 says that you really have to work the tractor not just run it too get the temp up.

Be careful when doing that; if it is your gauge which has gone bad, you can cook your engine. mike

It is probably the thermostat. Take the radiator cap off right after you start it and see what kind of circulation you have. If the thermostat is open you will see circulating water/antifreeze. If the thermostat is closed,as it should be with a cold engine there will be little motion.
