LoL Bet I've broken more bolts off in this retoration than anyone ever. Head, manifold, water panel, and now the block. Grandad was supervising today though, so it wasn't just my lack of experience.

Bought an engine hoist last night, got the front bolster slid out from the rails in preparation for Grandad coming over this morning to oversee pulling the block.

Everything finally out, front plate and gears, rails off, the top bolt inside the starter, and this last one, the outer top bolt, would not budge with my 200lbs. hanging on it. Put a pipe to it and it broke, along with a piece of the cast around it. Crap. Now I can't get the block free. Grandad thinks maybe a punch on the remaining bolt to push it through. Anyone had this happen know what I can do? Changing my name to BoltBreaker.

did you remove the two dowels in the flywheel housing. they look like two studs stiking out. there threaded just put nuts on them and pull them out. if you didnt get them out this will really hang you up. just giving you an idea maybe, chris.

If the broken bolt is still hanging up in the hole, I would use a die grinder to remove enough material to clear the hole. A drill carefully centered (using a center punch) on the broken bolt head will also remove the excess. Use a drill just a 64th inch bigger than the bolt, and stop just at the casting Enough room must be made to have the drill motor aligned with the bolt!
If it is still hanging to the housing, there may be other bolts you have not removed. It should slide out cleanly.

Welding the casting that is broken can be done so well that when ground back to smooth it will not show. Not an easy weld, but doable. Good luck, JimN

If its the top bolt on the left, facing the front of the tractor - its a long bolt. If the head of the bolt is broken off you should be able to pry the engine forward far enough to clear the bolt. Just try to keep everything level as you pry them apart. I think the bolt is 5 /6 inches long.

That's the one, and it is long, and I think it's rusted in. The threads are loose because I can rock the block sideways, but won't go farword any. Thinking if I can get a punch on it to move it or at least just enough to get a saw in there and cut it, I would take that. Going to the store now to get one, let you know how it goes.

Hi,

Drill it out enought so that you can use an easy out or tap it out.
