Does anyone know how to install a tachometer on a Cub? I was also wondering how to know which direction tach I would need to get. Any help would be great.

I think what I found is actually a speedometer.

I assume you're thinking of a mechanical tach? Dunno where you'd be able to drive it from without a lot of work, don't think a tach was an option even on later Cubs.

An electronic one wouldn't be much a a problem to hook up on a points/distributor system, dunno for sure how (or if...) it'd work on a magneto system.

The tach was an option and there is special two piece bracket for mounting it on the steering column. It will fit any Cub with a distributer provided you change out the distributer drive.

Any IH tach with three speed bands will have the correct rotation.

I saw one recently sell for $660. I wish I could find the one I bought fifteen years ago. It was perfect. The Cub board has some close-ups of the bracket. They are good enough so that a person could make a resonable metal copy.

This appears to be a different tractor.

Getting back to rotation, any gas IH (Stewart-Warner) tach will work. I think they are all calibrated the same. The main difference between models is the face. MPH in gear bands will differ as well as 540 PTO line.

The diesel tach rotates in the opposite direction and the tach face is a mirror image of the gas tach face.

Come to think of it, you may be right. Some tach faces go to 24(00) and others go to 30(00).

A case in point would be the 560 which turns 1800 rpm and the 660 which turns 2400. They use basically the same engine. I presume the tachs have different scales and different calibration. The parts book gives them different numbers by one digit.

Also, the gears for the "hours" part will be different, depending on what RPMs are used for the "hours at xxx RPM".
