Okay, I got my clutch out of my M. After I followed all the steps on this site and others, it came out in a dramatic fashion, and that's fine.

I now neeed to replace the clutch and have all the parts. I think I need help figuring out how to install the pilot release bearing (I have it in and and the orientation doesn't seem to matter). I have read that it goes in the flywheel, I suppose in the center, and needs a smidge of grease. I am not sure it came out when all else fell out two days ago. I don't remember seeing anything the size of what I just got in the mail.

With regard the the clutch release bearing, I think I generally know where it goes on the shaft because the remnance of it are still there. But it looks like a pressed in sort of bearing which must turn one way or the other. One side is flat and has a lip on the outside diameter. The other side has the bear rings exposed with the grease. Which way does this face oon the shaft? It may be obvious when I get out there, but maybe not.

Bill

Your pilot bearing is probably still in the flywheel. They are greasable and last a long time. They can be a bear to get out. Put your finger in the hole and see how the bearing feels. If it is smooth turning I would not replace it.

"The other side has the bear rings exposed with the grease" Thats not right, you shouldnt be able to see the bearings on the release bearing. But it only goes one way, the flat surface to the pressure plate.

I may have discribed it wrong. I can't see the ball bearings, I can just see the side that turns. Flat side to the pressure plate is the answer to the question I need about the the release bearings. As I said, my old one fell all appart.

Thanks

The clutch that I just put in the M that the tractor supply store ordered in over night came with 2 wrong sized bearings. They had to match up 2 new bearings with the old ones in the tractor. Nobody was sure why, they said all the M's took the same size bearings but guess they don't or maybe a W6 had same clutch different bearings don't know?? Could this be the problem just wrong sized bearing? With right bearings clutch should go together fairly streight forward. I have a different problem myself with the new clutch install that I posted. Good luck. Terry

I don't think it matters. Either way is fine. The one in my MTA looked identical on both sides. I just slapped it in.
