I have a 47 Farmall M how do you hook up the altinator is it just one wire to the battery. Is the tractor postive or negative ground. I bought the altinator from NAPA it is a single wire alt.

Thanks Mike

Most on this board would indicate that the single wire alternator works, but is not ideal. They discharge the battery slowly (a period of several weeks), and may take more RPM to start charging. Putting a smaller ~2" pulley on them can help the RPM issue. Disconnecting the wire when the tractor is stored can address the other. An Amp meter with a scale reading a bit bigger than the max alternator output is needed. The single wire is connected to the load side of the Amp gauge. Other changes (reversing the battery to Neg ground, and distributor wiring coil polarity reversal (changing the wires on the small terminals), and Putting a Ballast resistor in the ignition circuit are needed. New 12v bulbes are needed in all lights. This is just an overview. I would put a fusable link, or heavy duty fuse holder with appropriate fuse) in the wire from the Amp gauge to the starter switch. with a rating about 10% over alternator output rating. This keeps the smok from comming out of most of the pieces if a failure happens. Good luck, JimN
