I use a little aviation permatex. Most people use way to much gasket maker ( silicone ) and it finds it way into the filters.

I had some stuff in a spray can that I used to use and it was great, it was sticky when it dried ,in seconds, and you could set a gasket in place and it wouldn't move on you, it made a good bond and you could still pull the gasket off if you needed to..I think it was a Permex product, a red spray, I used the can up and haven't come across the product for a while .but haven't looked hard either, I think Carquest handled it. As far as it being a necessity, I don't think so but I liked the adherent quality it added to a gasket job...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hi-tac Permatex spray (and brush) Works well for holdong things in place.

Five sealer types are used by me.
Hy-tac, for positioning and hot side seal.

regular brush on Permatex in the blue can for difficult sealing apps.

Permatex #2 non-hardening tube paste form. for removable components (eases disassembly 50%)

RTV silicone for gasketless metal to metal joints, (just a thin skiff of material to avoid squish out and contamination of adjoining areas.

On head gaskets I follow recomendations on manufacturers label. I use Copper coat spray as a head gasket sealer when called for.

I don't know, but when you get it figured out let me know! I've tried about 3 different kinds of sealer both with and without the gasket on my MTA oilpan and the D*** thing still leaks like a sieve!

Is it leaking on the left side,, closer to the front of the engine? if so, there is 2 cork like plugs that fill in a hole from the casting on the left hand side, if they are gone, oil is allowed to rest right on top of the gasket, it will hold for a whiel, then leak like its got a pin hole in the pan! Might be something to look at? Chad

No back end of the motor. I was thinking rear main, so I changed it, no help.

I'm with Allan.

If you get the joint good and clean, the gasket will seal. If you don't, the sealer may help.

At most, seal only the hot side so you have a chance to take it apart later and still save the gasket. I like to seal rocker arm cover gaskets to the head for that reason.

Straighten sheet metal covers (use a square to check) and get the metal around the holes dinged back straight, don't overtighten them and they will seal like magic without goop.

Depends on how much empathy you have for the next guy who has to pull that part.

Sealers are designed from the aftermarket crowd as a "take an aspirin and call me in the morning" thing. They just make ya feel better.

Total waste of money, to my humble mind.
