noise in hydraulic pump on 300U

I asked this question a couple of weeks ago and didn't get too much response so I'll try again. The pump on my 300U has suddenly started making a combination grinding/vibrating noise for about 3 seconds after using the hydraulics and then it stops. When I first heard it the system was low on oil. I drained the system and refilled it and the noise is still there. Any ideas before I do my usual thing which is to spend money on the wrong thing. Could it be the relief valve sticking? I've got 2 valves (one is 2 pt hitch) and both do the same thing.

Charlie, you have the right approach, seek advise and go slow. I jump into things, as indicated by a almost new hyd pump for a 300 u sitting on my bench, in case you need one.

If it is a buzzing noise, it is quite common. Some times it takes years for it to start doing it, some never do, some do it continually from birth, and some start in old age. If the engine is not laboring when it is happening, and the system staus at its normal temperature, I would not do anything. If it does labor, or the system seems weak, or the heat builds up, it needs to be fixed. This may mean a new diverter for the p[owersteering (if equipped) or adjustment of centering on the valves. or check valve replacement. It is hard to analyze without more info, and a symptom that affects operation. Good luck, JimN

Thanks for the info. The system has always labored when used and the oil will run hot after the tractor has run for a while. It has good lifting capability. Is there more you can tell me based on this information?

If it labors when the noise is present, even if the valve is in neutral, then quits when the noise stops, there are issues that may need attending. The systems do run hot, but not so hot that things smoke. Temps should stay below 270 F while running and being used. Good luck, JimN
