Farmall Cub Radiator Problem

This morning I was running my cub when I noticed a lot of steam coming from the radiator area. I thought the radiator was plugged so I took it all apart. I discovered there isn't a tank on the bottom of the radiator. I talked to the radiator repair shop. The owner suggested I buy a new radiator right away. Is that really the solution? I did notice when I got the radiator off the overflow pipe is broke off. Could that be the problem that caused the steam? Do I need to use anything special to keep the gasket in place? Suggestions???

Boy I'm at a lose here, I thought the(cast iron) steering housing was the lower tank on the Farmall Cub tractor. What year are you talking about??

This is what mine looks like....

I wasn't completely clear in my post. My cub looks just like the picture. I should have said that my Cub radiator isn't like the radiators on the rest of my Farmalls.

You may have just seen the steam because of the broken overflow tube.
You can make a temporary bottom plate from a sheet of 1/4 plexiglass or similar material. You'll need enough clearance for the bottoms of the tubes if you make one.
You can re-solder the overflow tube and re-use the radiator if it looks ok otherwise. It is a non-pressure system - the later ones were low pressure systems. Aftermarket replacements run about $140 if you decide to replace it.
