I have a 1950 Super A that has been converted from 6 volts to a 12 volts. The alternator is a one wire alternator that has one wire that goes from the post marked "to battery" on the back of the alternator to the left side on the amp. meter. To get the alternator to charge you have to rev the engine up to at least 750rmp. Most of the time when you rev it up it will start charging. Then sometimes you get on it and rev. it up all the way, and it won't start charging. I checked all connections, all are clean and tight. If someone knows whats wrong please reply

Just to add to what the others have said, thats a common problem with a 1 wire alternator. Most need to be turning 1000 plus RPM to get them to kick in and most tractors don't spin up that fast. Do as Bob say and get a 3 wire and be done with it

Toss the GOOFY one-wire alternator in the trash, where it belongs, and get an original-type 3-wire Delco 10SI, and connect it like this:

Third Party Image

If you'd like an "idiot light", simply OMIT the diode, and wire an indicator lamp with a #194 bulb, or a bulf of equivalent current draw into the SAME WIRE. The diode and the #194 lamp are direct substitutes for each other.

NOTE...

SOME "one-wire" alternators have the #1 and #2 terminals, shown in the photo, accessable, and functional.

In that case, you can retain the alternator you have, and connect the circuit to it's #1 "switched excite" terminal, and it will then begine charging at startup, with NO NEED to "GOOSE" the engine.

Some alternators do not perform well on low RPM tractors using the one-wire set up. You have two choices: 1) use a 3-wire set up; or 2) put a smaller pully on the alternator to raise its RPM's.

As already mentioned, make sure the belt is not slipping first, but do not over tighten - that is hard on alternator and fan bearings.

If the brushes are getting worn out, there will be a period of time that intermittent operation will happen. see if tapping the alternator will make it charge. Use a medium tap, don't mangle it. If this works, it may need brushes. JimN

Have you checked the mounting for the alternator? If the mounting bolts are dirty/greasy, your circuit may be bad as the frame of the single wire alternator must be in good contact with the engine. Single wire alternators have an internal regulator. If there is no demand (battery fully charged) it may not show a charge. If the alternator was designed for automotive use, may require more rpm's than your Super A produces at idle (Put a smaller sheave on the alternator).
