Hi Don, how many hours on that 784? If that D246 was maintained reasonably well, like regular oil changes, fuel filter changes should get 15000 or more hours out of the engine. Top rings can get broken if someone over ethers it when cold starting and does engine lockup.

My brother has a 454 D179 with over 15000 hrs and 684 with over 6000 hrs and both still running great.

My first suggestion would be find a 4 furrow plow or 12ft disk or corn chopper and run it hard for a couple days and see if it uses any oil or excessive blowby before tearing into the engine.

I'm gonna run her first like you said but it's actually my step dads tractor and he wants to plan for the worst and hope for the best type deal. The tractor only has about 10000 hours on it and like I said blowing the head gasket is the first problem we had with the engine. Is there anyway to visually tell if the injector pump did get turned up so i know if overfueling is a problem. I haven't done a whole lot with injection pumps. Thanks again

The pump and the injectors may need to be rebuilt
by a reputable shop that rebuilds injector pumps
and has a flow stand. Hal

Don, If the photo doesn't appear click on the link below. Then double click on photo to enlarge. The screw on the side of the injection pump in the photo that has the black arrow pointing to it controls the amount of fuel to the injectors hence HP. The screw should have a wire through it connected to the other flat head screw on the side of the pump and the wire should have a seal on it. If this wire is missing means someone has tampered with the pump. To increase HP loosen jamb nut and turn screw out a turn or two, tighten jamb nut and lengthen STOP/RUN control cable so that STOP/RUN control lever on the side of the pump limits against adjusting screw. Please note sometimes the STOP/RUN lever slot in the dash board has to be lengthened with a file or hacksaw blade so STOP/RUN control lever will limit on adjusting screw and still shut off fuel so engine will stop.

To reduce HP loosen jamb nut and screw adjusting screw in a couple turns, tighten jamb nut and adjust STOP/RUN control cable.

I don't assume any responsibility for damage caused by anyone that uses the above procedure but above is an explanation of the method to adjust.
