So chad is there any difference at all between the 8060 and 8574. I have an 8574(also off an lp)that I wanna use. I wanna bore my block for 450 Firecrater pistons and sleeves and have my cam ground. I have a 450 carb. How will that work for me and what could I do better. Thanks Mike

I have custom setups with pistons and rod combos that can put a 281 in the 70 hp range with an old 8060 head. I like the M throttle body better, larger idle circuit, and add a 6 cyl carb bowl, and you can idle a stock to pretty modified engine,,,, If your 281 makes 150 psi, thats in the 55-60 hp range. Save your money on the custom cam,, the 450 cam is great! Find one of those, you wont be disaponted. The heads are the same,, just one is newer than the other,, less prone for cracks??? maybe,,, M block wont take the 450 sleeve flange size,, have the sleeve flanges cut back to the M specs,,, bore the M block to 4.25 and drop in the 450 sleeves. make sure the block is good, cause old M blocks are thin at the bottom,, even at 4.25. Is the 8574 better to use than a regular gas head?

Id say if there is any difference, its the fact that the 8574 heads are newer iron. You could be worse and have a old old 8060 from the 40's and be rusty or cracked beyond compare. Id say, less prone to find cracks in these heads,, age seems to make a difference in the conditon. otherthan that, the heads are identical castings. compared to an old kerosine head,,, oh yeah, lot better! its listed in parts books as a GAS/LP head, but its nothing more than a 8060. They were a newer casting, with a different 4 digit code.

Next question,is it a good head for a mild pulling M engine?Have domed pistons in the block too, does these make for a good farm puller? Thanks

Yeah, it would be ok. Id shave up to .100 off it, that will help, and not cost alot. a 450 cam would wake it up too! Chad
