Well i had a head gasket blow on my 784 diesel. I sent the head out had it plained checked for cracks you know. Picked it up the shop said it was good so I slapped it back together after checking the deck on the block and everything adjusted the valves and so on. Now though she smokes white and blue worse then it did befor and I can"t figuer it out. Any suggestions.

P.S. the head gasket was definately blown.

thanks Don Brien

Don,

Not familiar with your tractor, but is that the 4-pop German diesel?

If so, ya can't "grind" the valves/seats. All gotta be replaced new to keep the deck height and compression level right.

Now, on the other side of the coin, if it is indeed that German and the head is all correct, when started cold they all push blue/white/grey smoke until up to temp and working. Maybe it's just normal?

But, I'm just guessing here,

Allan

I "think" that is the German.

Have you taken it out and "pushed" it yet to see if it clears up after working it a bit?

Could be normal German engine operation?

Dunno,

Allan

I had it run for a while and the smoke seemed to clean up but i never pushed it yet. I'm planning on putting it on the spreader so that should give her a decent load.

Hi Don, 784 should have German 4 cyl D246 engine.
D239 was used in 574,674,684,695. Same engine just slightly larger bore. They do like to blow white/blue smoke until they are warmed up or idling around doing nothing. You can reduce the smoking when idling by not pulling the STOP/START/RUN lever all the way to the top of the RUN position. Leave it down 1/4 to 1/2 inch and this will reduce the fuel going into the injectors and cause less smoking.

Have you owned this tractor all its life? Maybe someone cranked up the HP by adjusting the injection pump and it is being over fuelled.

Sorry about that you are right it does have the 246. We've had the tractor now for almost 8 years and this is the first engine problem we had. But we haven't used it when it's been cold out in about 2 years now. Befor the headgasket blew it was warm so that could be another reason why we are noticing the smoke more now. I guess we'll just run her and see what happens.
