Sorry for the off topic item but I always get help here. I am raising a late batch of broilers (cornish X-rocks). They are growing well and are about 4 weeks old. The problem is they have started picking at each other. I caught 2 yesterday that were picked bad I sprayed the bad spots with blue coat. Their area is clean they have aprrox. 8 ft X 8 ft for 30 birds. Last night was the first night I did not leave a light on all night I thought to calm them down. Does anyone have an idea what is causing them to pick? I have raised them before with not as many problems.

Ever hear of the pecking order? They will test the others to see who can peck who. There will be one that can peck all others. It goes down the line untill there will be one that can be pecked by all. It happens in the workplace sometimes also. My $00.02 worth. David.

Your dinsenty on the Birds is okay . At this age if you are going to keep them on a 18 hour light program you need to make sure that they have endlest suppl y of Feed. Caniblism is common in poultry if they are started with good feed conversion then cut back at a later date. Remember your lighting is cut at the same rate of feed to prevent moulting.

From the home of more chickens than I care to own up to....

1) Too much bird, too little space.

2) Takes protein to raise good chickens. Check your feed and maybe adjust the protein UP. This works for us when they start picking and feather eating. If you are feeding scratch you are off the mark. I feed a very high protein content until fully feathered and then cut it with wheat and whole corn. Look at the label and see what you got.

3)Let them out if you can. This spreads them out more and alleviates a lot of bad habits.

Need more info on your care. Do you let the birds free range during the day? Do you have a exercise, outdoor pen? No way you can keep 30 birds in that small coop 24/7. Are you taking food away at sunset? Changing water every day?
Using white or red light?

They may be craving salt, get the pecked birds seperated until they get healed up.

Where are you located? Could you ask a poultry specialist near you?
If there is not on around, I know of a guy that works for University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus that might be able to help you. Email me and I will give u his e-mail address.

Lee,

You've got to separate the bloody ones off or else the others will eventually kill 'em.

My guess is that they are pickin' each other because you have them piled on top of each other. Need a bigger pen.

2 sq ft per bird ought to be enough, but a larger pen may help.

The pecked birds may be liberals. You know how they always get picked on.
