I mentioned buying this tractor about a year ago but never did..but anyway i still have a chance to buy a complete farmall B that has been in a shed for the past 10-15 years. It isn't locked up and the tires are great. He says it ran when it was parked they just ran out of uses for it. What i'm wondering is if this tractor will have any problem pulling a 5ft. pull type bush hog to do some light mowing around my brothers farm...i won't be mowing over any brush or anything just mostly some fescue and out of control rose bush's. I was wanting to find a Farmall H for this but the B kinda fell into my lap and i started thinking about how much shorter the B is than the H for getting under tree's and such. Oh by the way the B is 500 dollars.

any input is greatly appriciated

Having mowed with a Super A and 5ft belly mount, I will say it will be underpowered. If you keep it mowed and mow it small it's ok. Tall thick grass and weeds, no. The problem is in heavy grass or weeds you have to use 1st gear, first gear is too fast and the tractor can't handle it. I do most of my mowing in 2nd, could even use 3rd if the ground wasn't too rough. I no longer have the fast growing weeds, etc which will slow you down. If you are going to let the stuff grow a month between mowings, you will likely have probems.

I think I'd buy the B and worry about upgrading later. You might be plum happy with it.

If the tractor has been setting in the shed for 10 to 15 years there is a good posibility the tires are dry rotted, even though they look good.

Some what different opinion. Used to mow CRP with a B and a 5 foot trailer type bushhog. Low gear, the B would handle the bushhog. 2nd gear the B wouldn't pull it. That was with a fresh overhaul.

Don't want to talk you out of buying the nonrunning B. For a bit more money you could get a running tractor with hydraulics.

Yep Gene I have to agree with you on that one. Shoot you can buy a good running H for around twice that money and even find some for less

Should handle a 5 footer just fine. A friend on mine uses one on his B and doesn't have any problems and hes cutting small trees with it. $500 maybe a little high unless the guy gets it running but then that might be a little low. Now if you really want and H I have 2 of them I'd sell LOL. Be sure to look the engine over real good, a lot of them have a crack on the right hand side from sitting with out anti freeze in them. I know I have a B that has a crack that starts just below the head and goes all the way back to the other end of the engine. Of course its just a parts tractor and theres not much of it left any more

the only problem i'm having is i don't have twice the money, and i'm having a hard time finding an H around here that isn't completely worn out...the big advantage i see to the B is that it's alot shorter. If i could find an H around here for that price i'd jump on it instead but as it's looking now the B is about my only option...

keep your opinions coming guys...should i keep looking for an H or go check out the B?...

Go to my web site and you can see pictures of one of the Hs and a lot of other tractors I have. Shoot I only have 25-30 tractors and most of the time I have a few for sale. Where is humbolt I've heard of it before and probably been in your area at one time. Decades ago I lived in Winfield kansas but thats been 40 years ago.

according to mapquest i'm about 160 miles from you. Humboldt is 10 miles north of chanute, or around 50 miles west of the missouri border.

Ok I know about where you are then. I spent a good number of nights in chanute back when I was pulling moblie homes for a liveing. Always seemed like we had to stop when we got that far. Shoot as close as you are you could rent a car hauling trailor and come out and get one of these Hs from me

If you have not gone over and looked at the B. Go and look at it, does not mean that you have to buy it right then. You could always get the B now and if it is not big enough for you, look for an H and sell the B if a good deal comes up. What part of the country are you in. maybe someone on here can help you out.
Brad
