Hi fellas, Well i've finally decided to convert my 340 to 12 volts. I'm tired of buying batteries every 2 years. Does anyone on here sell a conversion kit for my farmall 340 or what's the best way to go. Thanks PUTTER

Hi Putter,

Changing from 6v to 12v will have nothing to do with not having to change battery's. Buying cheap battery's or having a high resistance circuit would make a difference and cause excessive battery replacement.

I personaly only buy Optima battery's as they last a very long time, 6yrs plus and there viberation resistant. They will also take repeated discharges without battery damage.

My IH-340U was half a$$ 12v converted when I bought it. They stuck on a single wire alternator and added a 12v battery. That's it!!! LOL

The engine would only run for about 15min before the coil over heated and killed the engine. I changed the coil to 12v and have not replaced any lites as I don't work in the dark...lol The lites were burned out when I got it.

There was a factory alternator option for the 340/330 series.

The bare minimum you will need a one wire alternator and a 12v coil with a resistor. Change the bulbs if you want lites.

You can use the 6v starter but just don't long crank on the starter.

Yeh T BONE, I know I can get by with the starter and I wouldn't worry about lights right away, mine are 5 or 51/2 in seal beams. I use this tractor to keep the snow plowed at the other place and the 6 volts just won't stand up to the cold. I put 00 cables on it and a new napa comercial battery last year and now it won't start if I leave it sit for a couple weeks. I guess i'll go with the one wire alt and use BOB M's wiring diagram to start with. I don't think alt size is an issue on a 340 as the generator is on the left side low on the engine not under the hood. Thanks for the replies. PUTTER

Under the hood of a 340 I would use a mitsubishi alternator from a mid 80s nissan PU. they are quite small, and will allow adjustment under the hood. Simple mounts can be made using the original bracket and some spacers and longer bolts. Be sure the pulleys are lined up nicely. Wiring for the system is in the archives under mitsubishi alternators. Personally, I do'nt think you need a 12 volt system! If you take care of things as I do, then that explains why your batteries are only lasting 2 yrs. Try keeping connections clean and if you do'nt use it in cold weather, take the batt. out and put it in the pumphouse or basement on a slab of wood, I do'nt take care of mine as I should and still get 4-5 yrs out of a battery!!!!! !!

I had my generator converted to 12 volts and bought a 12 volt regulator, so it would look original. You can keep the 6V starter. Also, I would change it to neg. ground.
