Looks like I am going to be leaving the company I have worked for for 15 years.
I have been offered a job with the local phone company as a broadband tech.

Wife and I have talked about it for the last 2 years and decieded that if I ever get offered a job with a utility company that has a pension plan that I would take it.

Well that day has come and I must say I am pretty scared. I didnt expect that.
I guess it must have something to do with a job you know and do well. Going to some thing you have to learn anew.

Damn 401K if it would have only performed I wouldn't be doing this.

Wish me luck guys I am diving in!

Good luck Pard!

I just made a job change six months ago. It was an easy decision since the new job allowed me lots of time off (time off to go power-farmin')...
but it's that feeling of change that makes you think twice.

Looking back on it though...I wish I had made the job change sooner. Hopefully the pension plan is safe and that 401K finds it's way north again. If worse come to worse, I've still got 30 years to go...so I'll make sure I keep that Social Security rolling in for you!

Good luck!

Billy

I don't like to rain on this parade, but please keep in mind that many companies are ending their pension plans, even for their currently retired folks, and the courts are allowing it to happen. That promised pension may not be there when retirement time comes.

One simply has to prepare to fund one's own retirement through savings and investmennts. Ir's forseable that Social Security may not be available in the future either.

Good luck on your new job. I too did the same thing you are going to do and it turned out to be a major improvement in my work life. Changed my attitude around on pretty much everything in my life as well.

Kelly, good luck to you - I'm 55 and just retired June 1 from 35 years as a power co. lineman. We're not rich, but we're o.k. It seems like yesterday I was the "new guy" there. Time waits for nobody -

Sounds like a move that a person would want to make. Some of these small phone companies can really show a healthy return on their investment. My Wife inherited some shares of common stock (original issue date of 1904) in a small regional phone company. They have been paying a quarterly dividend that adds up to about $200 per share per year.
Good Luck with your job and all of your projects.

Sounds good. A utility is pretty secure. That's rare now, and getting more so. Make sure you roll your 401K over - the utility will have a 401k plan or an equvilent. A pension that pays out @ 12K per year is approx. equal to 250 - 300,00 in a 401K, at a 4% burndown rate. Conservative? - Yeah, but when it comes to retirement, I want to be pleasantly surprised. Good luck.

Let's hope there's a difference in depth, too. Things could get pretty smelly otherwise.

Kelly, I know you are apprehensive about changing jobs, it is considered to be the third most stressfull thing a human being can encounter, a death is #1 and marriage break up is #2, so little wonder you have some conderns. I will assure you that everytime I had to relocate in my teaching I felt the same way and about a week after I got there it was like I had always been. You will adjust quickly and you appear to be bettering yourself. Like I always say "A year from now this won't matter" Best of luck and post after a month, I'll bet you are happy...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I think building a house should be in the top 3 stressful things... friends just finished theirs and I think they aged at least 5 years in the year it took to finish... And trying to afford to buy a house should be #4 on the list.

Oh well, at least I can still afford to buy, fix, and sell cars that are 10+ years old!

Whatever you do just be sure you are happy doing it. I work for an airline and lost my pension in the bankruptcy. The airline is still there and I still enjoy my job.

I learned 2 things.

1. Do what makes you happy. Life is too short not to.

2. Just because you"re promised something in the future, don"t count on it.

Dave

Kelly, I quit a good job when I was 29 with the N C R CO. in 1971 to Dairy farm with my Dad. I quit farming in 1996 not knowing what I was going to do. After some short jobs, some custom field work, I got my Class A CDL then I could not get a job local because of no experence, did not want to go over the road. Got a job delivering ice it lasted 3 months then the weather turned cold. I got the job I have now started when I was 55 I will be 65 in Nov and will keep working full time. I guess what I am trying to say is go for it. JIM

Life is about changing, nothing is supposed to stay the same for too long. After only 2 1/2 years at my job, I'm feeling like it's time to get some more college classes under my belt and look at moving on to greener pastures...

Just make sure to have a secure retirement plan.

Go for it Kelly we are always afraid of the unknown.. I have been with this outfit for 15 years and had hoped to retire from here. Not looking good with the downsizing and outsourcing. So I too am brushing up the resume, and going to check out some jobs available with the railroads. good luck Tallperson

I stayed with private industry, and had my own business. Now, at 60, I wish I could retire, but? Make the move and don"t look back. Life is like that, just a series of choices. Best of luck with the new endevor. Geoff NY

Luck and best wishes Kelley. The switch may require adjustment, but the security will be worth it. The learning of new abilities can be acomplished at any age. I tell my Non-traditional students new concepts every week, and they prosper well. JimN
