How good is an IH 46 baler 10 thrower

Guys,
I am not familiar with IH balers and was looking for some expertise. I have a chance of buying a 46 baler with a 10 thrower on it. The only problem I see with the baler is the axle on the plunger side. Where the cast axle offset bolts to the baler, it appears to be bent, making the baler sit lower than it should. Is there anything else to be wary of? I am used to running a NH 273 baler & thrower.

The thrower needs drive belts. Also, the thrower seems to be in a fixed position. Can a person add a hydraulic ram to make it swing? I have smaller fields and would lose a lot of bales on the turns. Thanks for your time!

Hi JJL, we had an IH 46 Baler and #10 thrower for many years. The thrower has a locking pin on top to hold it straight for transport position.
When in use there is a mechanism that connects to the wagon pole and steers the thrower.
Later we welded a bracket to the baler and thrower and installed a hydraulic cylinder to steer the thrower with. This allowed controlling the placing of the bales on the load. The other problem we had was the spring in the small adjustable pulley on the drive shaft, spring becomes weak and belt will slip or go all the way down to the center. Simple solution was to drill 3 holes in the pulley, add the appropriate number of spacers and put 3 bolts through the holes to make it a fixed pulley. Now just control the throw of the bale by the speed of the PTO.
Re 46 baler, good baler, must keep twine knives sharp and knotters clean. Never had a problem with axle. Likes consistent good quality twine. Does not like thick and thing twine.

Hope this helps

I had a 46 baler for two summers. We made 4000 bales with little problem. Maybe didn"t tie 10 bales per thousand. Take it slow in big windrows

The 46 is a pretty good baler but IH had to beef up some things to run the thrower. Later models had a lot sturdie axle on that side because of all the weight. I love my model 46 but I think I would stay away from the extra weight for that model.

I got a very nice NH275 this summer for 1000 dollars. Had to buy about 100 dollars in new parts, duckbills, and wedges. Couple of guards and teeth. It dropped two long bales at first startup (simple adjustment) and since has not missed one bale in over 1000. I don't see why you would want anything less than this, I've heard mostly bad about IH square balers.

JJL, I had a 46 baler for years & it worked well as long as the knotters were clean. Never had the thrower - that was me. Unless you can get this one dirt cheap, it sounds like a money eater - bent axle plus? belts, etc.
