My distributor got water in behind the plastic plate where the points are mounted. To help dry it out I sprayed the inside of the distributor with starting fluid. I thought that it would evaporate quickly and be clean as well. Ever since then I need to reclean and sometimes file the points in order to get the points to work. What are the contacts made of and have I permanently damaged them. I have new points that I can put in, but I was hopeing these when be ok.

What everyone else said but I'll include this. Clean the contacts with a clean solvent such as electrical contact cleaner. I think(??) brake parts cleaner would also work just be sure ir containd no oil. Use a strip of good grade bond paper, cut not ripped to avoid any lint. Dampen the paper and drag it between the contacts. You may need to take off a little tension to avoid pulling the paper in two. Drag thru a least twice or until the paper remains clean. Remember the purpose of 'cleaning' is to remove the nonconductive dirt not to remove the conductive face of the contact. Ever since I was taught to properly clean relay contacts I figured 'point files' were sold by the same guy who sold the points.

Once you file points, they're never the same as new, and you will be filing them again and again.

Not to mention what the water and "cleaner" did to them!

Bite the bullet, and get a QUALITY new set.

You probably still have water in the distubutor and thats why your haveing problems. Get a can of eletric cleaner and spray it out real good then use air to blow it out. It doesn't take much water to mess up the points, a couple drops and they will not work till cleaned
