Hi guys,
More trouble with the W6. When we tried pull starting it this time, the charge indicator pegged as far into the drain as it could go, and the tractor sputtered and missfired constantly. It never started. It would pop, but never stay running. Any ideas?

Hi Chadd,

The first thing I would do is run a hot wire from the battery to the coil. If it starts and runs then you have a wiring problem.

If it still pops and sputters then I would start from basics and check mechanical timing.

Back firing could have caused the engine to jump timing. If that's true then you need to replace some worn out parts.

Chad, Ima thinkin along the same lines as Bob n Jim,,,,, ,,, I really wonder if the genny was incorrectly polarized n you messed up the Voltage Regulator????? ? If theres a heavy discharge that can be caused by a VR that has a stuck/burned/welded cutout relay. If she was drawing a high discharge current but it stops if you remove the wire on the VR's BAT terminal, sounds like the VR's cutout relay is stuck/burned closed. If the belt is removed and the genny spins like a motor thats another sign the cutout relay is stuck closed DONT LEAVE THE VR CONNECTED IN A HIGH DISCHARGE CONDITION (remove the BAT wire) it runs the battery down n the genny gets hottttt t

You need to stop n regroup n insure first shes wired correct,,,,, then charge the battery,,,,, then do as Bob noted n polarize the genny n insure the cutout relays NOT stuck closed. If its stuck, when you attach the BAT wire to the VR she will discharge heavy buttttt tt that has to be connected before polarizing if you polarize by flashing the VR' BAT and ARM/GEN terminals together,,,,, ,you may be better off polarizing by (before connecting to VR) you flash touch the wire that goes to BAT on the VR first direct to the gennys ARM post to polarize n then attach to the VR's BAT terminal n hope she dont heavy discharge (stuck cutout relay).

It may be possible to seperate n clean n light file a stuck cutout relay points n make her work again buttttt tt once the shiny silver is gone n they are rough n carboned they can go bad again soon

Would this cause the points to burn? The points were fine before I hooked up the generator. Now, points are pure black and have transferred material from one to the other. It almost seems like something was backfeeding them or something. Also I found a distributor advance spring post that is very loose. I found the spring laying in the bottom of the distributor. I would imagine that would cause the hard starting, huh? Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

The spring is supposed to keep the timing retarted until the RPM increases and then centrifugal force advances it. Without a spring to hold it back it may be wayyyyy yyyy fast and thats hard on starting fer sure.

Not sure on the points, I would get her charging correct first.

Low voltage to the coil will cause this condition. There is (in my opinion) some serious issue in the charging system. A good rule, stated here often, is that if it won't start with the starter (or crank) it is broken and needs repair. I would use Bob M diagrams, and John T procedures to get it correct. JimN

Be sure the battery is installed with the correct ground polarity, and then polarize the generator BEFORE starting it again.

It was polarized according to the instructions that came with it before I started the tractor. The battery was installed with the correct polarity (i.e positive ground)
