Case-IH is part of CNH Global (Case New Holland) CNH is in turn owned by Fiat. The part of the old IH that was not sold is now know as Navistar International (correct me if I got the name wrong), that is the truck division was not aquired by Tenneco, and as far as I know is still a stand-alone company. A lot died with the IH tractor division. Whether the current products are better or worse than they would have been if IH had survived will never be known.

CNH is publicly traded. Fiat just has the majority share, something like 80% of the stock.

So is Ford and GM, that doesn't mean they can't have problems (they do). Fiat has had problems, I don't know what their status is now, that does not mean it will affect CNH -- just a reminder who the parent company is.

When I was at update school in Racine, one of my instructors put it in a way that IH bought out J.I. Case with Tenneco money, and when you study the line of equipment it was mostly from the IH side. They used the Case tractor until they came up with the Magnum that had the IH drive train that originated from the 50 series minus the powershift. The engine, hood, and cab came from the Case side. But now with CNH we still have the Magnum with IH origins of the transmission, the Stieger which they built 4 wheel drive tractors for IH, and the Axial flow combine that IH started in the 70's. All the rest of the tractors smaller than the Magnum are from New Holland. So in short we now have red blue tractors and blue red tractors. Deere's only bragging right is that they don't have this problem with colors and names, yet anyway.

Case bought International Harvester division(IH). International itself still exist and IH lives on in Case models. Regardless, it doesn't change the fact they made some of the greatest American tractors.

IH did not go out of business. It still exists today as Navistar. They make International trucks. My IH stock became shares in Navistar.

Technically, IH sold it's agriculture division to Tenneco, a holding company that already owned what was left of Case, which wasn't much. Believe me, the Case name would be long ago gone without the Case/IH merger. Tenneco then merged the two into Case/IH. Case/IH seems to have kept the IH engineering department from the looks of it.

Case/IH was spun off by Tenneco into it's own company, which then merged with New Holland. New Holland had already owned what had been Ford's tractor division.

Or, at least that is how I remember it. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I have it wrong.

Dave said it better. I stand corrected, it was Tenneco.
