I"m trying to gather my thoughts here- My 1950 farmall M just was brought back home from the Wayne County Fair in Wooster, Ohio. I"ve worked and sweated for two years on this and it turned out really well. The fellow that brought it home for me told me when he got here that there was a problem. Someone had put an old nasty looking punch in the fan of my tractor and when he started the tractor the fan carried it around and wiped out the radiator, the fan and the shroud. I"m somewhere between heartbroken and REALLY PO"d. The damage is done and of course I"ll fix it, but why would someone do this? There was a very nice display of old iron at the fair and I was very happy and proud to be included. Some of those boys have some very nice pieces of equipment and The M looked just as good as any of them. The fair was 7 days long and I couldn"t be there every day and the guy that brought my tractor home was good enough to get it and bring it home and he didn"t want to charge me after what happened. I"m very disappointed and I guess I just learned a lesson I didn"t want to. Thanks for listening. I had to tell folks that would understand.

Regards-

Check with the fair officials. They would have insurance to cover all entries. I chair our county fair's antique tractor display and Insurance is a major issue.

I feel for ya. I've heard stories from the Armada fair in MI. Purposely scratched/gouged sheet metal. I even heard a few tractors had their batteries "liberated" years back. In a sense nothing brand new. I agree the class of people has changed at these events.

Bottom line is watch your stuff! Remove things like batteries and such for the night. If/when I get around to leaving my tractor for the week, you can bet many things will be removed at night for safe keeping. It's a crying shame!

craig, i know how you feel. my son was rebuilding a d john deere for me at school and i had to get a new radiator core. while it was at school someone from another class period flattened the fins on it about 5'' square area. mainly i think my son was not one of the popular guys at school and this was just a way for someone to make him feel smaller yet. some other damage was done to other shop stuff but they found out who did all of that and not who almost ruined my core. son straightened the fins and graduated. we will move on, but i hope whoever did it will learn a lesson some day before he or she does something worse.

Seems like the county fairs draw all kinds of undesirable people, unlike tractor shows. Local machinery dealers quit brining new stuff to our local county fair, due to all the vandalizm that their new equipment recieved over the years.

Go to a large show like the Red Power Roundups and icidents like that are practically non existent, due to the better class of people that are drawn to such events. Fairs draw low lifes from all walks of life along with the good people, too.

That is a shame your tractor was needlessly damaged.

What lesson did you learn from that? Just curious.

Well I guess I learned for the umpteenth time that I should be careful what I ask for because I might get it. I wanted to have that tractor at the fair because I thought it was important to me. The other comments about "lowlife's" are something that was reinforced again. I guess I learned that there are people out there that don't want other folks to have something nice. I will stick to my local one day show and not let that tractor be away from home overnight unless I'm right there. I know it's only a tractor, however this is my only one and I should have known better.

Never Again-
Craig

I ask because I plan on taking my tractor to shows when I get finished with it.

Mike is goign to be all show. I'm planning on roping it off with DO NOT TOUCH signs around it. Armed guards, etc etc. (ok, maybe no guards)

Years of aviation expereince have taught me to walk around stuff before starting it up. Especially when other people have had access to it. Sounds like you couldn't because you weren't there. Bum deal, really.

Sorry to hear about the damage. Too bad your M is ruined. I'll buy it off you for $5 so you won't have to worry about it anymore. :-)

What the "person" did was set this tapered metal punch on top of the shroud. When my friend drove the tractor up onto the trailer the punch rolled off the shroud and fell into the fan and made the mess. The best pre-flight wouldn't have found this . The "person" had to reach way up in and place that punch where it was. They knew what damage it would do. The more I think about this the more I realise that this wasn't some kid being stupid. Someone deliberately did this. I'll probably never know who, but to repeat- I'll never go back to that fair again. Armed guards really don't sound like a bad idea, though.

Regarding your kind offer to ease my pain-

Naaah! Nice try, though. I've tried that several times myself so all I can tell you is keep trying, Sparky.

Regards-
Craig
