I have a W4 tractor and I was trying to remove the starter, I took out the two bolts on the flange starter mount. I tried prying the starter out but it hits the end plate before it is out, I tried turning it and prying it but it is such a compact fit. Does anyone know a trick to getting the starter off the tractor??

Thanks

When a full fledged Voltage Regulator (what pic shows) is used I RECOMMEND SETTING ANY 3 BRUSH GENNY TO THE MAX CHARGE RATE NOT LOWERING IT !!!!

The third brush adjustable gennys were more for the old cutout relays and light switch controller but since you have a full fledged VR its internal field current control relay system should limit the charge rate WITH NO THIRD BRUSH ADJUSTMENT REQUIRED !!!!! !!!

Again, if that extra high voltage is only short term temporary I wouldnt worry so much buttttt ttttt t if it keeps the battery at over 8 volts permanently its gonna overcharge!!!!! !

I still wonder about your voltmeter acuracy, stick an old fashioned ANALOG Simpson 260 on it n see what she reads, you may not really have a problem but if you do, suspect the VR or a shorted genny Field or shes wired wrong

A word of caution. My starter was replaced just before I purchased it.The person doing the work used silicon as a gasket when they replaced the belt pully housing. The machined surfaces on the castings were more than the silicon could handle. As would be expected, an oil leak developed and my solution was to buy (6.00)a real gasket and fix it right.W4

Yes! The belt pully has to be "removed" But if you take the four small bolts off each corner and the 2 long oness in the centre you can slide it to the side enough. Its a heavy sucker so taking it off completely makes the job more difficult than it needs to be. You should be able to do the whole job in about 20 minutes and be running again.

Take the bolts that you can get to on the clutch cover out and pry up on the cover just enough to get the starter out.Only once did I have to remove the belt pulley drive to do change a starter on my I-4 and that was the first time.
