Hello All,

I need to get my ’43 H overhauled. It was my grandfather’s, which he bought in ’47. I know it has never had any motor work done to it and it still has the original clutch, which is weak. The compression in the all cylinders is down around 95 psi and she fouls plugs and burns oil real bad. What would be a cost estimate to have her put back in sound mechanical shape? I was considering using the Case IH dealer Hoobers in Lancaster PA. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Matt

Re: Engine Overhaul in reply to P and R Pete, 03-07-2009 07:12:20
Man, you just rained all over my parade. It"s ok though, I still think I"m up to the challenge. At least, I think I will be by the time I start. I can be a bit impulsive, but i can also keep my cool. It sounds like I"m going to do just fine, with a little help from my friends. I do have a couple of people who know engines really well that I could turn to in a bind.

I hope that will be the case. I will jack the tractor up and see if I can hear anything. I just redid the brakes and they were not oily, but I did not remove the backing plates. Will the bull pinion or axle feel loose at all or do the housings support them to well to tell if there is a bad bearing? I will dig into it today and report back, thanks, MIke S.

You can pretty well figure at around $60-100 per hour for labor and 10-20 hours labor. Then you have parts which could be any where from $500 just for an overhaul or up to around $1000 for a rebuild. Overhual being new rings, rod and mani bearings, and a vlave job. That wouldn't include things like haveing the crank turned or other thing that it may need. If you do the work your self you can do it for around $1000 give or take a little depending on what all would need to be done by a machine shop. These numbers are only ball park and they maybe differant for your area

If you plan on hiring that work out, you better have pretty deep pockets. When you're done you'll probably have 5x or more into the little tractor than what it would bring at an auction. In refurbishing old tractors a person generally needs to do their own work. Even then it's not hard to end up with 2-3x into a project what it is actually worth. However, when repairing "grandpa's" tractor, all the rules change. One cannot attach a dollar value to such a project. Enjoy the process, and all the folks you meet/deal with along the way. That's the most fun part. WARNING: tractor collecting and refurbishing/restoring is addicting.

Why don't you rebuild the engine yourself? You can get sleeve and piston kits from this forum.
The have an overbore sleeve kit that has stepped head pistons for $ 348.00. Click on Engine kits
at the top left of your monitor's screen.

Call Hoobers and see what they would charge. They have 4 dealerships in the area. Two in PA and 2 in DE. Don't you have a friend that likes to do engine work? You could pull the engine, but before you do, you need to take pictures and make good notes and sketches where everything is attached. This is so you know where and how goes back together. Hal
