My 684 originally came with a non working tach. I replaced the tach with a used one and a used cable. It has never really worked right. The tach needle flops around a lot and doesn't register accurately. A little while ago, it quit working altogether. I ordered a brand new cable and now it works again, but just like before (flopping around). I'm not sure if its the tach drive that's bad or the used tachometer. How can I figure this out without buying a new tach(they are not cheap)? Anybody out there have any experience with tach drives?

Thanks for advice everyone. I think I will try the drill thing first to see if the tach is good and then go to the drive next.

To test if it is the head, or tach, use an electric drill on the shaft (at the drive end) to apply even rotation. (use the correct direction, CW or CCW) if it "fixes" the problem, it is the drive. If it still is wild, take off the cable and drive the head with a short chunk of rod ground to the same size as the cable end. If this fixes it replace the housing. If it still goes hay wire, it is the head. good luck. JimN

Does that one have the tach drive that runs off the front of the camshaft? I know that the U.S.-built tractors with the German engine do, but I'm not sure about the British-built ones like your 684. I have seen a few problems with the tach drive on the U.S.-built tractors with the German engine. Our 3088's tach would stop working altogether. I could unhook the cable from the drive and see that the drive was not turning. I'd remove and inspect the drive, find no problem with it, reinstall it, and it would work fine for about a month. Eventually I figured out that the tiny little shaft that fits between the camshaft and the tach drive was sliding forward and disengaging from the camshaft. I measured that little shaft and found it to be about 13/16" long. I kept welding up the end that fits into the camshaft and grinding it to the correct shape until it was 1" long. Haven't had a problem since. Be very careful, as that little shaft is small and could be dropped down into the front engine cover. It's also kind of difficult to get that little shaft so it engages both the cam and the tach drive as you reinstall the drive, so start the engine and make sure the drive is turning before you hook the cable back up. Also, there's a jam nut that holds the drive from turning, it often works loose. It's hard to get a wrench on, you need somthing very skinny, beleive it's a 7/8" wrench size. I modified one of the wrenches that came with a 4" angle grinder.

If it's like my Model 784 (which I also bought with a non-functioning tachometer), it quit working also after a few hours with a new cable (even though there were NO kinks in the cable or other visible issues). I will have to check out the tachometer next.

Make sure that your cable is not geting kinked someplace and that it has smooth run from the drive to the head . Lube the tach cable with white grease or graphit . Check the drive for a broken tooth . Or woloed our drive end allowen the cable to flop around or slip.

Yes, 684 tachometer drive is at front of engine and runs off the camshaft.
