My dad is wondering: he has a Farmall model M year 1948 tractor. Behind the water pump are two zerks, the bottom zerk has a threaded cap covering it and the above one does not, why?
Any information apreciated, thanks, Deb

One of the zerks is to grease the water pump bearings. The other greases the water pump shaft packing. Neither of these need much grease. The bearings have shaft seals and over greasing at worst may push the seals out of there seats or if the seals are not tight, the grease will come out and make a mess. If you overgrease the packing, the grease will just go into the coolant. So not much grease needed, only a couple strokes a year if you work the tractor. If you don't work it, not even that often. So the covers were there because you did not need to grease very often.

It's been lost. I have some with one, some with two, and some with no caps.

They are to prevent over-greasing and putting grease into the coolant.

Refer to the owner's manual on frequency to grease. Two shots twice per year is what I do, just like the threaded plug on the distributor drive.
