Ok guys, first question is, how do I properly flush my hydraulic system, I can readily do everything (got all new hoses for free =), so I'm going to flush the lift cylinders out), except the pump. I plan to remove the resevoir cover (1 of the bolts is froze, so that sucks). Do I need to buy a new gasket? I cant imagine i would, as there is no pressure there, but anyone with experience in taking the cover off may know better. Where do I get a new hydraulic filter at, or is it just a screen i can clean and reuse?

Here is why I need to clean my hydraulics as good as possible.

At first I thought the cream color was from water, but these pics are of the oil sitting for over 3 days. Disregard the black patricles on the bottom, as I drain this from the hitch cylinder and it was quite dirty. I am confused by the nearly mayoinaise looking stuff on the bottom? Any idea? I ee no water settling out of the oil. Now I'm sure you understand why I want to do a thorough cleaning of the system.

IMHO the white stuff at the bottom is the water that the fluid could not suspend using it's additive. I think HYtran keeps some suspended and the white stuff is the excess that it could not keep suspended.

Hi Jay,

The white stuff is soap and is made from mixing water with oil with heavy agitation. You'll need to add heat to re-seperate the water and oil once it's to the soap stage.

Take some vegetable oil and add a little water in a blender and it'll look the same.

The used oil will clean it's self up if you let it set long enough without distrubing it, (not the soap stuff) then run it thru a filter and it'll be decent oil for alot of things, including fuel oil.

Well I have thought of doing just that, but hydraulic fluid is soo $$$

Altho I do have an UNLIMITED supply of used hydraulic fluid from a nearby factory. It's used, but not bad. Its cooled to 85 degrees F for their fiberglass 4,000 ton presses.

Its not my best option, but it is my cheapest. Its not the dealer fluid, but its alot cheaper. I cant imgine it hurting anything, as the factory has alot of older equipment. This stuff is used in the cylinders, then it goes back into a cooling chiller, filtered, then bak in too the 5,000 gallon resevoirs for reuse, so i shouldnt say its used (as in ready to be thrown out).

Though I'm not sure it is all applicable, hear is a repeat of the advice I gave in a prior post: When the tractor is cold, I would remove old screen and drain as much fluid as possible from the res. If you can, use a suction gun (looks like a grease gun that sucks) to get all of the fluid you can out of the system. I would then replace the screen and fill the res with new fluid. I would use an open hose on a remote cylinder connection into a bucket. Before starting the tractor, move the control lever to the position that will apply pressure to that hose. Then, with the lever moved, momentarily start the tractor 10 to 15 seconds. This should flush out that line into the bucket. If milky fluid is still comming out fill the res with new fluid again, and repeat until new fluid comes out. Then connectr to the other remote line and do the same thing, till clean fluid comes out. Refilling of course to prevent air from entering the pump. Next (if i was thorough) I would remove one of the FH cylinder hoses and blead that till new fluid came out. then the other side of the FH cylinder. This process prevents old fluid from being sucked back into the res. and also prevents the mixing (as much as possible) old and new fluid. Working the tractor for several hours will eventually drive off the remaining moisture from the system. Good luck, JimN

I'm talking about the really white stuff on the bottom. it is settled out. I dont think the white stuff is oil or water, it has settle out of that mess in the middle and is still white. In any event, I want it all out so it doesnt rust my new cylinders!!

It's water all right, Along with dirt etc. It seems to get homoginized and never does separate. I had some heavy gear oil I wanted to salvage, I let it set for a couple years and it never did settle out.

I've had success putting a light bulb under a five gallon bucket of oil-water emulsion and that will help it separate. Of course you never really get all the water out of the oil but it is good for pouring on baler chains, etc.
