Let me start by saying I'm NOT bashing IH, the 400, or trying to strike up controversy. This is just a little thing, but couldn't IH have come up with somethng better than that bent/offset shift lever. When they get a little worn, they sure are a knuckle smasher. I'm a CASE person and people have a field day with our "chicken roost" steering, etc.

Run the tractor a while & you'll likely find it's the most user friendly shift lever possible. It is a natural - maybe I really like that shift lever cause I'm a lefty. You can shift while looking back at drawbar & moving throttle or hydraulic levers or watching the blond next door and never have to look for or at the lever. A couple years ago I bought a 300 that a 6 ft 7 guy had straightened out the shift lever til it reached up about nose high. That lever is laying on the shop floor and definitely for sale (cheap).

In my opinion, two options come to mind. (maybe both) Pull the lever and build up the tip so that it just fits in the slightly worn rail slots. Make it bigger than needed, then grind it down till it fits just without binding. The second is more radical, but there is no reason to heat the lever near the crooked part, evenly for about 4", to red heat, and bend it in a nice arc to give more clearance. It won"t take much. I've never figured out why they made them so tall. When you cut a fott off of them they work like an M. The way they were designed it seems the engineers thought you might be riding on the fuel tank and need to shift.

I will agree it is not the best design, But for the 1950's, It is probably all they could do because of patents and compition in them there days. It is just like everything else, we all wear out eventually...
