Well, this expensive story starts out like this. After rebuilding the engine in my Super C last winter, I decided to go completely over board and do a restore. Now, I know enough about engines and what not to be dangerous, and I had a few snags, but over all, it went smooth. The rest of it went well, I sand blasted all the sheet metal and had it painted at a body shop owned by a friend, they came back BETTER than brand new! I painted the tractor with IH red and it too turned out great. Infact, the entire tractor looked like it almost came off the show room floor. My problem started when it came time to fire it up, and by the way, it started right up. It was running kind of rough so I decided to slightly turn the distributor clockwise, [I did mention earlier I know enough to be dangerous and this is where it shows.] Then, BANG and a loud one too. The tractor would not start or fire and turned over real slow. You're thinking, you jumped timing and it should be OK. Well, after fooling with it for two weeks,I had a local antique tractor mechanic haul it away and that bang is up to about 1800.00 total at this point, I'll know more next week. It took out my newly rebuilt starter, the cam gear, the governer gear and a few other gears as well. To add to my misery, the mechanic called me yesterday and got it running GREAT, but now the hydraulic pump was over heating. He took it apart, and it appears some gears got ground up in there and ruined the housing as well, so that's shot too. Oh well,I guess it's cheaper than my neighbors 15000.00 John Deere that he mows his back yard with.

Worth it from a financial standpoint?
Of course not, but what the heck does that have to do with antique tractor restoration? Common sense has nothing to do with it. Just don't tell the wife what it costs.

I recently purchased a SC that had the timing gears damaged because the previous owner ran the tractor without hydraulic fluid in the tractor. In my situation, the timing and govenor gear teeth found their way into the motor crankcase. I then pulled the engine and did an out of the frame overhaul. Had the engine beadblasted because I wanted to make sure I got all of the timing gear teeth out of the engine. Luckly the block and head was OK. You'll love her when its up and running again. Marv

JimN, the mechanic said the same very thing about the hydraulic pump being the possible culprit. As for the starter, when I took it to a local auto starter re-build shop, they told me that I exploded the armature. I don't know how I could have done that but when I got it back it turned over real good.

From my experience, A starter will explode the armature for two reasons. The first is not common but does happen, and that is thet the solenoid, or starter switch gets stuck and leaves it running without load. They (being a series wound motor will spin gust as fast as they can. With many starter armatures this is still not enough to explode them. (it would go a long way toward that event if it was a 6v on 12v, but still not usually an issue). The other way is if the wrong drive was installed or the drive stuck/jambed in the engage position. The flywheel would thin spin the starter into orbit. Best of luck, JimN

I do not know how the starter got involved with the grief, but it may have been nothing to do with your timing of the dist. They might run rough, or quit, but they won't grenade from a distributor issue, unless they are run under load with the timing off and overheat or detonate the tops out of the pistons. I feel it may have been that failing Hyd pump loading the gears that wrecked the engine. JimN

Look at it this way:

The tractor ran for 50+ years. It'll run another 50+ years once you get it fixed.
