Farmall M carb problems

Our 1941 farmall M is running too rich it has some sooty black smoke coming out of the exhaust. We have rebuilt the carbureautor it has a 4 cyl gas engine. The engine has recently been rebuilt but that was before we bought it.

When the throttle is increased it kills the engine then it catches and starts running at a higher RPM sometimes it even backfires.

Just can't seem to get it adjusted without it killing the engine. Any advice from someone with more tractor experience than us would be appreciated. This is our first tractor.

Did you adjust the carb per book? Remember the power screw and idle screw work opposite of each other as far as air and fuel adjustments.

The carb probably needs to be removed and cleaned. The Idle circuit may be plugged to the point that the main jet, and float level are supplying all the fuel for idle. when opened up, it bogs with lack of fuel for a half second, then is given more than it needs. Float level, clean passages, and plenty of fuel in the lines and sediment bowl are needed. If the idle adjust does not make a difference, it needs cleaning. JimN

Don't be too quick to blame it on the carburetor. It sounds to me like either the ignition coil is weak, or the ignition timing is way too slow. I am leaning towards the timing being too slow.

I just had the same problem with an M. I changed the plugs to Champion D21's. They are hotter burning. Next I leaned out the carb tightening the gasoline screw in to about .75 of a turn. I next closed the point gap a little and that also helped somewhat. I next replaced the coil trying to get a hotter spark. This helped a little also. After that I adjusted the valves. Last but not least I rolled the distributor in toward the block and it almost totally quit blowing black smoke. It seems to be alright now, but I still think it needs worked hard to burn off any residual carbon on the plugs.
