I'm going to rebuild my Carb. Will I have to set aside $300 to do it??

So Rusty, I bought this carb cleaner at the auto parts store.
Is there other brands that are better than this stuff? I paid $15 for the gallon.

Randy

Honestly Jon, I don't know. I know that my Carb needs some work. I'm assuming it needs rebuilt... or at least I am GOING to rebuild it since I am overhauling the tractor. But I don't know anything about anything on these tractors yet, and part of the project is learning. I guess the question would be: Is rebuilding a carb more than I can handle? Rusty gave me some great tips to get my current carb running better to get the old boy home. Seemed fairly straight forward, but I haven't actually done the work yet. I'm guessing that a rebuild is taking the whole thing apart, cleaning it, replacing the internal parts, and putting it back together, adjusting it after it's installed. So what is so bad about that?

... although if a rebuilt kit cost $90, and you are just charging me $10 more... that is awfully tempting! lol

Mike, you can do it yourself, and you may or may not need the complete kit. It is entirely possible that all you will need is a new needle valve and seat, and a couple of gaskets. In fact, you may not even need the new needle valve and seat. When I get a hold of a crusty old carb for rebuilding, I just replace everything. That way the person who buys the carb is guaranteed to not have any problems, and I don't get any returns.

Here is a question that I am going to use very very often in this forum...

How will I know what I need?

If you have more money than time, buy a good kit and replace everything. Most people do this.

If you have more time than money, take it apart, clean it good, and reassemble it unless you see something obviously wrong like a missing choke plate, float full of gas, etc. Once you get it assembled, put it on the tractor and try it out. If it stops leaking gas, the needle valve and seat are OK and the float is OK. It is pretty cheap to pull it back off for more repair if you like. Like Rusty Farmall said, he replaces everything because he is protecting his reputation with customers.

Mike, that carb on eBay is very reasonable. A good, complete rebuild kit from Case-IH will cost about $90. Less expensive kits are available, but I can tell you from experience that the quality of the aftermarket kits is nowhere near as good as the IH kit. To do it right, you will also need a gallon of carburetor cleaner. Been awhile since I bought any, but would guess another $10-$15? You will also need an air compressor to blow out all of the small passages in the carb, and if the carb came off of a derelict tractor and is full of rust inside, then you are going to need a sand blaster to get the rust out of it. Now, let's say you are doing this for a customer, so you need to charge a decent hourly rate. Most shops I am familiar with charge around $40 to $60 an hour, and you will have at least 2 hours in the rebuild. When you add all of it together, $125 for a carb that is ready to go starts to look like a bargain.

My last purchase of gallon of carburetor cleaner (the real stuff) was $43 from NAPA last year!

O.K., the price has gone up. The good stuff from NAPA is what I always use. Anything less and you are just fooling yourself.

Start out by disassembling the carburetor, cleaning and reassembling it. It probably just has some varnish from sitting and the parts are probably all OK anyway.

If you just have to have a new one, I'll give you $50 for the old, worn out, worthless one, as long as the castings are not broken. And I promise not to tell you what was really wrong with it.

You better get yourself some catalogs and an I@T manual. Then you will know prices and how and where to adjust something. Just because someone boo booed and spent crazy money for a carb doesent mean thats how much it costs.

Case/IH kit will cost around $50 give or take a little. A good aftermarket ket around $15-20. I get kits for them all the time and so far have had no problems rebuilting one. Rebiut carb from valuebilt is around $240 plus shipping but I would try to do it my self fisrt before going the buy a carb route. Shoot I could rebuild you a carb and it would cost less

Old, you're a bit low. The Case-IH kit will cost about $90. A truly complete aftermarket kit will be closer to $35-$40.

I might be getting a better price on my kits but I do have a dealer account at the parts store. I know the last kit I got was around $17 but its was also for a ford 8N
