i have a farmall M that seems to run rich. fouls out two plugs after running for a while, maybe a couple hours depending on job, but it's black soot, plus i have a slight bit of smoke out the stack. at any rate i've been doing some searching on adjusting the carb and cant find much, is there not just the idle screw towards the top of the carb and the main screw towards the bottom, other then taking it apart, which i dont have time to do right now, i just want to get it to stop fouling plugs so often and thoght i would start with this.
thanks

From what you are describing I would say that your carb is beyond any help you could give it by making adjustments. I would guess that the float is way out of adjustment or is leaking, the needle valve is dirty and sticking, or the main metering tube has some problems. But, before you get too carried away, you might want to clean and service the oil bath air cleaner, and also make sure that the choke plate is opening fully.

Initial settings are: main 2 1/2 to 3 turns
idle 1 to 1/2 turns.

Hopefully It is your carb and andys right on the money BUT I had an H a few years ago that did the same thing and it was a worn engine actually the valves were letting raw fuel through it needed a valve job super bad when she smoked it was black not blue and she did not burn oil I did not know that much about them, then and the machine shop said it was becuase the intakes were worn so bad. $150.00 late and a $100.00 valve set and no more smoke. The main screw at the bottom should be screwed in until the smoking stops.

However, the idle screw is an air screw admitting air to the idle circuit. If you screw it in, you cut off all the air and richen the idle circuit. The idle circuit does not affect the fuel much under load, however.
