Hello,

Well I made my last call to my local IH dealer this morning. I am sick and tired of being brushed off by both of the dealers I have done business with in the past. They don't want to deal with antique tractor guys and think they are a pain in the butt. Shouldn't be that way as I can guarantee you that older replacement parts are marked up more than new skidloader and mower parts. I don't need to drop $200 every time I do business with them to be appreciated.

That being said I called Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch this afternoon. I've talked to him in the past and he seems to be very knowledgable and good to deal with. Right now I'm thinking he will have all of my future business. Has anybody else out there dealt with him? Does anybody else seem to feel the way I do?

Thanks,

Mark

I'm not too impressed with the dealer in Sparta, MI. The guys behind the counter are usually too busy shooting the bull to notice a customer standing in front of them. If I can actually get them to order a part, they tell me they will call me when it comes in "Friday". Well, Friday was last April and I heven't heard from them yet.

Looks like you guys are having better luck than I am. I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and pay shipping from now on from some of the places you guys are recommending. I don't mind waiting a few days to hear back from a parts guy, I don't mind paying dealer mark-up on genuine OR aftermarket parts. All I want is some insight, knowledge and ambition from my soon to be new parts guy. That's what money from dealer mark-up is supposed to provide.

Did I tell you I had to inform one of the parts guys a few months ago that Farmall made a Diesel M when I was trying to order fuel filters for my SWD9? I should have looked elsewhere then.

Thanks very much for the input.

Mark

Here in Fergus Falls,MN we have a great long-time IH dealership; still called Fergus IH.
The parts men are very willing to go the extra mile to find the things I need for my restorations.
Like the others have said, find a dealership that has been around for a long time & you are more likely to get better service.

I'm with Roger46 about Bahl's implement in Hastings, they have almost been able to get the parts we needed for our two Internationals, except for a few F-12 parts, and that was just because its so out of date. I have never had any trouble with our CaseIH dealership.

Mark, I get most of my Farmall parts from Bahl's equipment (800 368-2155), a couple miles south of Hastings, MN. They have an amazing number of parts in stock for the old Farmalls. They are also very good at tracking down parts discontinued by Case NH. Vince, in parts, spent a lot of time locating some parts for my Cub just a month ago. They also have an new parts person that transfered in from Menomonie, WI where I used to get a lot of parts as I traveled to Menomonie for work. Roger

I have had just the opposite experience: I have received very good service for a number of years now from an IH dealer Hoober Supply in Intercourse (near Lancaster) PA, and am happy to recommend them. I live 150 miles away in NJ, and simply mail order from them. I usually get a package in a day or two. They always return my calls and don"t act snippy if I"m only looking for a few Orings. They have always been very helpful, and have no problem using their parts locator network to find anything they don"t have in stock. I"ve even bought old manuals from them. I do have the Parts CD, and order by part number. Check out Hoober.com - the parts man I always call is Earl Walker

It is a sad thing (depending on how you look at it)but my local John Deere dealer is a good source for IH parts. I called the other day looking for a plow share I could not find anywhere...in stock!

My parts guy says that JD intends to dominate the tractor parts market for "all" brands.

Go to Link and on the left side at the bottom search by manufacture.

I think some parts guys don't like to be bothered with older equipment becouse the have a hard time with the newer stuff, luckly there is some really good CIH dealers near me in Ontario that can find parts from a SC Case, Super MD to a 2366 combine, I find some people just have an act for the buisness.

Have you tryed Arnold's in St. Cloud? they have been there a long time. Also Greenwald Farm Supply in Greenwald,Mn. If you are 80 miles from twin cities you can't be too far from them.

When I did my Farmall C,I found the dealer to be excellent to deal with.I made it clear that the working farmers come first with their needs, look my stuff up when they had a spare minute. My dealer is an old line IH dealer. When I did my H,I had a parts manual,I gave them the numbers of what I wanted, they told me yes or no,and if they were really expensive.Like anything, you get good, and you get bad in everything, one can't tar all the dealerships with the same stick.

Mike is my first call. When I rebuilt my 460, my serial number falls under 5611. Everyone had kits for 5611 and up not below. Know one could tell me why? I called Mike he called me back 2 days later, he found out that it had smaller wrist pins. This is not the first time that Mike has helped me. He was able to send me the bigger connecting rods, in very good condition. When the boxes came it was better than Christmas.
I can not say enough about Mike.

Also Interested in your guys location. I'm 70-80 miles north of Minneapolis, St.Paul MN. I'm in farm country although not in the heart of it as you would be in Iowa or Indiana. Even though both of the dealers I mention were old IH dealers at one time it seems their focus now is skidloaders and mowers. They have some new (small)tractors out front and a handfull of older tractors also.

It just ticks me off that I can't find a parts guy that is willing to do any leg work to find my parts for me. I call or stop in for parts AND information. The guy this morning more or less said "nope discontinued by IH try a junkyard" I don't really want junkyard brake disks! (SWD9) I know aftermarket will make them and if my parts guy can't even look in a aftermarket catalog and order them up for me than screw him. IH was the largest produced tractor in its day and the aftermarket obviously realizes that there are still a ton of them out there.

Western Kansas, very few 40'/50's Farmall or McCormick tractors around here. Doesn't matter, they are in the dealers computer. The 9 series may be your problem, in particular the Super series, there weren't that many made, and the brakes are different from the smaller ones. And no, I don't expect my dealer to look up aftermarket parts for me. VB and others have your brake disks, though. VBdotcom has WD9 brake disks, probably Bates Corp and others.

It is a common belief that you have to buy parts from a local dealer----False. Find a different dealer, one that wants your business. With a credit card and UPS the distance doesn't really matter. Get a parts book so you can give some of the parts #'s.

I have 2 CIH dealers near me, each a 1/2 hour drive away. One dealer always shrugs me off and seems to order the wrong parts. The other is much nicer to deal with so he gets my business. He stocks some of the parts, but most arrive the next morning.

HI Mark, One thing is it helps to find a dealer that was an IH dealer in the past I have had trouble with the case dealers more. #2 I stand back and if an menanite farmer comes in with a plow part or something I always tell the dealer to go ahead and take care of them first or any one as far as that goes so he's not in a hurry trying to get my stuff. there are just alot of meninite farmers in my area is why I mentioned them,# 3 My dealer sells parts that are from the same place that I get alot of my parts ie: CHINA,INDONESIA,TIWAN, You get the picture, Most of the new parts are about the same quality or worse than good aftermarket. #4 My dealer has been around for about 50 years and I always listen to his exsperiance, He has done it all. I let him talk and ask questions about the old days he likes to tell me things like when CNH took over they asked for alot of the case IH parts back becuase they put the CNH name on a new package and marked them up about 300% to try and make money from there merge or buy out so always ask if they have anything instock before ordering. heck offer to buy them lunch if they take a few extra minutes to look for you or see if you can go to the parts room with them I have found all kinds of nos stuff that way that I have bought. Alsowhen talking about the ol days with my dealer he has brought out stuff for me to see that he has had around for 40 to 60 years that he bought at the prices of the old days also. and he will sell them to me for about a 10% mark up. i bought a set of SH fire cratores for $225.00 with rings and sleeves . that way. So in closing try and find a dealer that was IH back in the day. Overwhelm them with niceness even if they are having a bad day. If you have the time offer to help them or offer them lunch and ask them questions about the ol days and such.Give them time to make there money from big coustomers while you step aside. Now if there youngins, Just there to do a job this may not work, lol JON P.S. There is nothing wrong with buying parts from me either, I will not tell people here about my circumstances but I could really use the bussiness and you would be helping someone that could really use it. If you want a parts CD let me know?

I have used the CIH dealer in Missouri Valley, IA and they have been super to work with. It has been much easier after I got my parts manuals. I call in and give them the parts numbers and they give me a call when it comes in. It is much easier to use a parts number than try to explain to them exactly what you want. CIH and Randy don't always describe/call things the same way. To me a picture is worth 10,000 words. Just my $0.02.

Had a similar experience last spring. I had to drive at least an hour for a $1.00 O-Ring. Must have been an odd-ball, but the dealer sure whined about spending 30 minutes trying to locate the o-ring from my touch control and tried to sell a new pump for $600. Found a dealer who was in business to sell parts, and took it home. He even stays open until 3:00 PM on a Saturday. That is different, but the hay starting to fall that Saturday evening thanks to him. Next time I have a larger purchase I will remember the dealer who 'wasted his time' with me.

You can't go wrong with Mike. As to the local dealer, absolutely ZERO problems. I take him the part number, if it is available (computer takes 5-15 seconds to determine that), I get the part in 24-48 hours from the Kansas City Distribution Center, maybe a couple of days later if KC doesn't have it. Dealer does not care if it is a $200000 combine or a 60 year old tractor. As to the markup, that is done by Case-IH not the dealer. If you don't have a parts manual, get one, saves both you and the dealer time.

I guess it all depends on what parts you are needing. My local dealer is very competitive on most of the parts I need, and the mark-up is not any greater than it is on parts for modern equipment. There are several parts that a Case-IH dealer just plain cannot get anymore, and for those parts I turn to the aftermarket or to the used parts suppliers. I have heard good things about steel wheel ranch, and I have heard some not so good things, but since I have not done business with him, I can't comment, other than to say that he is not the only used parts dealer, nor is he the only aftermarket parts supplier.

Look in buyer feedback.

Steel Wheel Ranch is a good solid provider. My "local" Case/IH/New Holland/Ford? dealer doesn't even have the ability to look parts older then the mid 70s or so. You say McCormick and they think you're talking about a tractor made in Europe.

The parts CD you can buy is the same as the dealer has except that it has no prices and you can't order from it. I don't know if it is updated from the parts manual or not, it may have some of the newer numbers. Doesn't matter, the computer automatically updates. I spend less time buying parts for an old tractor than the farmers there at the same time do with modern machinery because I know what I am looking for. Take him the part number. I am satisfied that we can still get parts. CIH does not have to do that, and someday probably won't.

I give my local dealer the parts number and they still can't find it. If I order from my "old" dealer its not a problem - except he's 80 miles away and I have to pay extra shipping on everything.

He must not be connected to the system -- it's all there, he either gets it, or it comes up "not available". The Parts CD, which I assume is fairly up to date, prints the items in red if they aren't available. I really don't understand everyone's problem. There is always Carter and Gruenewald -- not good in an emergency, but fine for routine orders.

I've had no problems with the local International Dealer (yep, still says INTERNATIONAL on the sign.) If a part is NA, the parts man will order if for me from a aftermarket supplier. They have a lot of parts for my H in stock, or usually next day if they don't have it. I do have problems with the price of some of the stuff, but what hasn't went up in price in the last 6 years?
