H brake adjustment

My Brother in Law said the brakes on my H are pretty weak. He slowly backed it down a shallow hill, and it took a really long time to come to a stop. He was pushing on the pedals as hard as he could.

Is there an adjustment I can make to them to tighten them up, or are they just old and worn out?

Also, does an H have a parking brake? We couldn't figure out if there was or how to use it, so we just put it in gear and chocked the tires.

Mike, there is a "parking" brake of sorts. The inside brake pedal has a notched rack attached to it. On the deck plate, close to the inside brake, is a small rectangular shaped plate. You push down on the brake pedal so the brake is applied, and then lift up on the plate. The plate will engage into one of the notches on the rack, and will lock the brake into the engaged position.

I'm going to tell that to my B.Il> to give that a shot.

Sure is tough not having the tractor close to me. :-\

Did you get your manuals yet? They will tell you lots about the H.

Not yet. It's gonna be about $80, and I'm about a month away from moving into my house. So money is real tight right now.

Mike,
Forget the Guy Fay picture books for the time being.
An I&T shop manual is $30, an IH serviceman's guide is less, and at this point, it's something you really need to read through and get a basic understanding of this machine before going any further. I'd really hate to log in some day and read that you'd been hurt working on your tractor.

Don't worry, they are the next thing I'm getting. I'm ordering 4 of them from Binder... probably mid-month.

I just wanted to know if there was anything my B.I.L. can do to it in case our rock solution doesn't hold up.

Your brakes are band brakes, they are really good in design, and reliability. If the lining is worn off of the bands, they will need to be relined, or new ones purchased. Band brakes will slide the tires forward or backwards. You will need the manuals to correctly adjust them and set the bottom support adjustment. They are good and servicable stoppers. JimN

the farmall band brakes "by design" have much weaker stopping power in reverse than in forward. Just a fact of their engineering. I think the manuals even mention that aspect.

Not true.

Older Cub brakes, for example, are single-acting (only pulls one end of band tight around the drum while the other end is anchored to the housing) and will stop well going forward but lousy in reverse.

However, the H, M, newer Cubs, and probably others have double-acting brakes. That is, the brake lever pulls both ends of the band tight around the drum and thus is self-energizing in both directions.

Just pull off a brake cover and have a look-see.

Mike, even if the linings are not worn out, you may have grease in the brakes from a leaking seal. THis is a common problem with the older Farmalls. Cleaning the linings with solivent can work sometimes, but just getting the brakes apart To work on them can sometimes be a hairpuller. If you run into problems, just post them on here.
