IH--H4 Magneto Questions--Need Help!!!

I was under the impression that the magneto drive slots should be horizontal when at Number 1 TDC.
Is this correct??? This is a "B" Farmall.
If so I have a problem. My H4 magneto will not trip until it is about 35 degrees past horizontal.
The magneto works on the bench, but if I install it on the tractor, won't my timing be slow. There is not enough adjustment in the rotation of the magento to get it to fire TDC.

What have I got to do----Please!!!! Thanks!!!

Thanks to all for your input. I finally figured out what I was thinking wrong. (BRAIN CRAMP)
I"ve been working with too many distributors and got some of my thinking confused.

Could I blame it on old age????
I do that a lot!!

NO PAPPY, That is not right, It should trip at about between 1 and 2 oclock. The best way to time a mag is to put motor on top dead center compression #1 trip the mag just past #1 on the cap go a wee bit farther with the motor and install then turn the motor over backwards about a half rev then back to timing mark turn mag out wards untill it trips and tighten. Why not set #1 on TDC, rotate mag to #1 before it trips, then install mag with top next to block, and pull out until it trips -- that"s what the book says.

Horizontal? I don"t know as I set the timing with the rotor on, and don"t pay any attention to the slots once the rotor is installed. It should be pointing to the top right (#1) terminal in the cap BEFORE it trips. Sounds to me like you have it tripping on #3.

CNKS---Thanks for the response, but I have it set up in a test stand and am not using the rotor or trying to time the rotor. It just seems to trip much too late. When it fires (trips) the engine will be way past TDC.

My super A is the same way. I have it timed with the timeing gears and # 1 piston on the compression stroke. Yes the piston is down from top when the mag trips. But it runs like a top and you can get it smoothed out once you have it running by turning the mag back or frontwards. Anyway thay is how i did mine. Did it just a couple weeks ago after a rebuild.the slot willnot be vertical but angled.

Maybe so, but put the rotor on it and see what position it is in before and after it trips. If you don"t have a problem, it will be 30-45 degrees up from horizontal, before it trips, I have not paid any attention to the degrees, as mine are timed on the tractor. I"m too lazy to go pull the cap off my H. You could be right, I do not know, and I"m not at all familiar with your test stand.
