Hard starting cub

A old friend of mine has a cub that I was trying to get started for him yesterday. The thing will pop and sputter and maybe run for 5 or 10 seconds. He says its always been a hard starter and you need to choke it a good bit. He's been through the whole thing except the magneto and he swears the problem is in the mag. He has owned the 50s cub since new, actually his father bought it new. He says you can ctank and crank and just get sputters and pops and then come back the next day and she will fire right up and run great. Any ideas what might be going on here? Buck is getting up in age and his health is getting worse, sure would like to see that thing fire up on demand and make his life a little easier. I dont think its a fuel problem, if it is, maybe too much (flooding) The card drips fuel (he said it alwyays did that). I havent tried any ether yet and am hesitant to go into the mag since I know little about them.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

I've just repaired a '66 cub with similar symptoms. My guess is that it most defintely is a fuel problem.

I had a sputtering problem (especially under load) and noticed a slight leak betwen teh two halves of the carb.

I removed the carb and the gasket was worn. Since my nearest IH dealer is over 50 miles away and NAPA didn' carry the part I used Permatex blue to make a new gasket. Sure enough, it works like a champ now.

Additionally, there was a bit of crud in the nozzle.

I've got a carb rebuild kit on order since there are other issues as well..

Perhaps the carb was leaking from one spot and now from another what was a leaky carb is a leaky carb that is now allowing air to get drawn in through the body. If this happens you will have problems!

To remove the carb and disasemble took no more than 1/2 hour.

To apply the RTV (silicone), let it cure and remount took another hour.

Pretty easy to do..

Tony

Pull the coil wire from the mag's cap and hold within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground and have someone
to make an attempt to start the tractor. Be sure the kill switch is in the run position.

You should have a hot blue spark when the engine is being cranked. You may want to use a pair of insulated pliers so you don't get bitten. If the spark is weak the points should be cleaned and adjusted to .013". Don't remove the mag from the tractor. You can use a point file or use 320 wet or dry that's folded over so it will clean both points. Then take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean the points, do this several times. Then check for the spark again to see if there's any improvement. If it looks good reconnect coil wire to cap and try to start engine. The coil may be weak on the mag. Hal
