Dick: Depends a bit on the source of the black. If the finish is gone you may be able to correct that with new finish as some have suggested. I rather doubt that is the cause.

If someone in the past had that tractor and drove it with the last 12 months grease on his hands, you may as well heave the steering wheel and get a new one. I"ve run into this a couple of times, that old grease gets ground right into the wheel, and the only removal is the same rate as it got ground in there.

I don"t recall who accused you of driving with greasy hands, kind of rediculous, the folks that do that never complain about dirty hands. But remember this one,"My dad always said it was not a sin to get dirty, only if you stay that way." I just add that until you get a new wheel.

Clean your hands thoroughly before driving tractor. greasy, oily hands tend to acccumulate far more black than clean hands. Often think the steering wheel black on your hands is mostly dust and dirt, not wheel material.

Wipe it down with a good cleaner like brake cleaner or carb cleaner. Of course that will only help not stop it. Short of pulling it and haveing it sealed its just how these old tractors and and its badge of running one.
