I have a 1950 Super A. both lights front and rear lights was working fine on both bright and dim. after cranking it up tonight I found the front lights won't work on dim, the tail light works both ways. I have no ideal what the problem could be, or where to find the parts to fix it. It has been converted to a 12V system. can anyone tell me what might fix my problem, and where I find the parts? Thanks

A heater blower resistor from a variety of vehiclesin the junk yard will have a nice wire resistor in it. Either keep it on the mount it was in on the vehicle, or remove it and fasten it in (no solder, just bent wires) JimN

Clint,
From pictures & diagrams in owners manuel that came with a '51 Super-A.

Your light-dimming resistor on the back of your light switch is evidently open or one contact inside the light switch at the resistor is corroded, dirty, or broken. (but, first just check to make sure that the screws holding the resistor on the back of the switch aren't loose or corroded - careful, not too tight or somethin' might break). There were two versions of light switches used: One had 4-positions: L-H-D-B, and was used on tractors with a magneto and a cutout relay on the generator. That light switch had 2-resistors on the back. The light dimming resistor was the larger one (not the flat-wound one which controlled battery charging on the 6V cutout system) I'm going by the manual's pictures.

The second version of light switch was on SA tractors with battery/coil ignition and a voltage regulator. This switch had 3-positions O-D-B and had only one resistor (the headlight dimmer) on the back. In both cases the light dimming resistor looks like a coil of wire (about 8-turns of special resistance wire) connected between two of the switch terminals on the back side. I don't know the resistor's specifications. Hope this will help.

Gene-AL, having a relay instead of a voltage regulator didn't mean it always had a mag., it could be either mag. or battery ignition but with a relay would have the 4 way switch instead of the 3 way. My Super A had a mag. and 4 way, my Cub has the batt. ignition and 4 way and relay. Having a mag. or batt. ignition was a factory option and wouldn't affect the light switches.

Your Cub could have been changed to a distributer, invisible conversion. My 47 M and 47 C are that way, both distributers and both relays. Not many 47's had distributers from the factory, if any. My 50 C has a distrubuter and a voltage regulator, both factory, as far as I know. I think the voltage regulators became standard when the distributers became standard. I can't prove it. Someone who is sure of the answer needs to respond.

You're right, my Cub may have been changed, but I am sure of my answer. See page 39 of the I&T shop manual.

That"s page 47, and it does not mention the light switch, I did not read every word. All it says is that early models had a mag, later distributer. It really doesn"t matter, but the tractors I have that were equipped with a relay have the 4 position, regulator, 3 position. The switch doesn"t care as the high charge position doesn"t work if there is a regulator.

Jossette is probably right, or the resistor may be bad. The tail light is not supposed to be wired through the resistor, and should not dim with the headlights, if that's what you mean.

The parts are no longer manufactured. You might try salvage, one place is www.steelwheelranch.com. It may be something as simple as removing the switch and cleaning it.

contacts in the switch are burned and not switching it over.
