This may be a dumb question, but my son got me to thinking about this:

Is it safe, and just as strong to pull things with the 3-point drawbar on an H, or should you always use a monted drawbar? I'm talking stump pulling herem - not implements.

Pulling stumps is ok if they are under 6 inches in diameter and come easily. Harder stumps are dangerous to pull (or Jerk) out. My method reduces danger and works well. Use a welded iron "triangle" frame about 4 feet long on all three legs made from 6" heavy wall pipe. Put a pair of 1" diameter bolts welded on one point of the triangle to keep a chain from going to the side.
Lean the Frame toward the stump, and use the tractor as an anchor to pull using a chain ratchet come along to pull up on the stump. It is less exciting, but far more safe and reduces stress on your tractor. JimN

On your H use the swinging drawbar.

Well, thanks for the quick reply. I told the boy yhat I was not sure the 3-point draw bar would be safe. I think that when using the mounted drawbar that once the front comes up to the point where the hitch point is straight in line with the centerline of the axle that the front can't come any higher. Am I right about that?

Yea you got the right idea. Just tell him once he starts the pull watch the front and be quick on the clutch. Also don't push the point, I just put a clevis on the swinging drawbar, adjust the chain so the length between the clevis and stump is as short as possible and give it a pull. If it does not go...oh well!

You should be just as safe as using a mounted bar, but 3 point draw bars have a tendency to rotate 90 degrees and then bend because of the thin part being vertical - use a big clevis to keep it flat. If I had the option, I'd use a mounted draw bar.

For heavy pulling I ALWAYS use the draw bar that is mounted never the 3 point draw bar. The reason is that if you use the 3 point one if the front end starts to come up it will keep comeing up because the 3 point will also come up. The mounted draw bar in thoery will only let the front come up so far before it starts pulling the front back down

I was told that is was best to pull heavy loads from the point under the transmission. On my H this would have been the swinging drawbar. I will be interested to hear what others say.
