I am led to believe that a super "C" water pump will bolt directly, no modifications required other than a longer belt, to a "B". If this is true is it a certain year the "B" has to be for the no mod water pump?

I just put one on a B and the worst thing I ran across was the fan blades hitting the water pump pulley. I was lucky enough to have a fan blade in the pile of parts that worked.

Ya know, now that you mention it, mine hit too. I had forgotton that.
I just bent the trailing edge of each fan blade, near the tip, about 1/4 inch and it cleared.

It can be done to any A or B. You also need to change the outlet at the upper hose and put in a thermostat or it will never get up to temperature. You also need to change the head gasket to one with smaller holes. Otherwise cooling will be uneven across the engine.

It would be a lot less work to just maintain the original system.

I have a head off a 140 on mine and it has a lot smaller water passage on it and it also has lot of compression (205 psi)so I figured the pump would help keep it cooler. I know I could change the head but it runs to good to mess with.

Jim, I've been looking for a practical way to put a thermostat in my B. Any suggestions?

BTW, I've worked it hard plowing and then gone over the engine with an infrared thermometer and the temps have been more evenly distributed than they were before the water pump was installed.

Use the Super C parts.

I tried that, it doesn't work.

The Super C water outlet is 2-1/2 inch diameter, and the B radiator inlet is 2 inch. Also the water outlet from a Super C will bolt on the B block, but it is longer and comes out at a different angle than the one from the B.

The Super C water outlet and the B radiator won't match up.

Would sure like to have any good ideas anybody might have that could work though.

You are right. I forgot about the radiator difference. You need the parts from a C with a water pump. The parts from some power units are probably the same too.

Thanks, I'll try to find one from a straight C.

Just checked a parts book. It lists the C outlet hose as 2 3/8" vs. the B outlet at 2". So it looks like you still have a problem using the C parts. Probably requires a C radiator too. An early U-2 power unit with a water pump might have an outlet neck for a 2" hose but I have no reference to check on that. Besides, you probably would never find one anyway.

I put a Super C water pump on my 1940 B. Direct bolt-on, it only needs the longer Super C fan belt to make it work.

There are two drain outlets on the bottom of the water pump. you will have to use the opposite one that a Super C uses. All you have to do is swap the plug from one hole to the other. I also had to grind the plug down some to clear, but not a big deal.

Depending on the arrangment of the top bracket of your generator you may have to modify it a little bit. I found that mine fit by bolting it to the back of the water pump and using a Super C generator belt too.

I appreciate all the responses, but am a little confused..... ..Do I need a different head gasket or don't I? Do I need a thermostat or don't I? Is it the "Super C or Standard C" water pump parts that I need?
