Pull the coil wire slightly from cap and have someone start the tractor. Then look at fire from the coil wire to see if it's yellow or blue. Use a pair of insulated pliers so you don't get shocked. Is this a mag or distributor? Hal

If the float level is too low, even choking wouldn't help bring the engine rpm's up past low idle speed. Don't know which carb this unit has , but our Super C has a non-adjustable main jet, & depends on fuel level in the bowl to get correct air/ fuel mix. Just something to check if the mag thing is O.K.

The metering system for load operations in both carbs may be partially blocked. Does applying a little choke during the "falling on its face" help at all? JimN

Presuming the 2nd carb you tried is OK and partial choking did not help any, I'd be looking now toward a weak spark.

First check the easy stuff: If the engine has resistor plugs replace 'em with plain, non-resistor plugs (Champion D21 or equivalent). And if it has RFI supression (resistor) plug wires replace with solid copper core wires. Reason: Magnetos do not throw their best spark with resistor plugs and wires.

If that doesn't do it suspect the mag itself. Again do the easy stuff first: Clean (or replace) and regap the breaker points. Make sure the cap and rotor button are clean and in good shape. Check the mag is properly timed (impulse trips at exactly TDC when the crank is turned slowly by hand and the spark advances about 25 deg before TDC with the engine running.)

If still no joy try swapping with a known good mag if you can.

Good luck!

A mag that was not timed correctly (stuck in the retarded start) setting, might be a target for consideration. Does it click when starting? then quit making noise when ideling. JimN

Are you sure its getting enough gas? Make sure there's no dirt/rust in tank, gas line or carburetor. Hal

Is the fuel supply to the carb restricted or the gas cap a non-vented type?
Disconnect the line at the carb & see if there is a pencil size stream flowing. Catch the gas in a large enough container to verify a decent flow rate.
You may have someting floating in the bottom of the tank that temporarily covers the fuel inlet.
