Trying to stop oil from seeping onto my brakes.Looks like there are two seals per side. One turned one way and one the other. Is that Correct? I ordered new seals from my local Case/IH dealer and got them today. What I recieved was two seals part #610870c92 and two cork washers part#63089D.None of this stuff looks like what I have.Is this a change to something better. Thanks for the help.

If you only put one seal in per side, I think you"ll be sorry...it will probably leak. The originals had to be that wide for a reason. I thought I could get away with one seal being mr. macho mechanic (30 yr.) but I shot myself in the foot as the saying goes. The new seals are narrow enough to pop in two. Install with both seal lips inward and pack the gap between them with a good grease 360 degrees around, grease the seal surface of the drum and reassemble. You won"t have that problem for a long time. (provided the bearings aren"t sloppy)...Randy

But if you go to IH with the seal part#, they'll only give you one modern seal. I imagine the old ones were as wide as they were because of their leather construction. Not very sophisticated.

In my experience a new seal that leaks is due to 1) faulty installation 2) worn bearings 3) worn shaft 4) wrong seal. I've seen the retainers go bad also.

I put $1100.00 worth of new bearings in my trans and rear end ('47 M)Bull gear shafts included. Of course you'll only get one seal from the dealer...Heck, you only get one strand of water pump packing over the counter too, when you usually always need more than that. I've simply learned the hard way that you double seal everything you can...including the upper bolster seals...period...Randy

There is only one seal per side. The original seal is twice as thick as the new one and has leather as the seal. You just need one new seal per side, the modern seals are much better than the originals, you could put in two if you want, but it is not necessary. Be sure and install the seals with the lip to the INSIDE of the tranny. The cork washer goes behind the washer on the bolt that holds the brake drum on the shaft. This keeps oil from leaking out from between the brake drum and shaft.

While I dont have the part #s, I can tell you that if the seal thats leaking is original, then its one big thick seal and youll have to go inside the tranny to get them out properly. Dont try taking out the housing from outsdie the tranny as you will break it. Ehat I was able to do successfully is to drill two small holes on opposite sides of the seal and put in two sheetmetal screws.I think the onea I used were a coouple of inches long, and pried on the heads until the seal came out.It took some time but I think it took me less time to d othat than to pull out the differintials.
