Ha anyone here done their own alternator conversion on their Farmall?
I have a Farmall 100 that's already set up with a pretty good alternator setup but it's a homemade affair and I need to replace the alternator itself. I was thinking of using one of the spare ones I have from one of my 1966 mustangs and I think that will work fine.

The question is though, will the 6V voltage regulator hold up and if so where is it located on the tractor because it is escaping me. Certainley.....certainley this thing has one but aside from the lightswitch there is nothing else on my little console. Is it hiding under some part in some obscure loction? The wires from the alternator to the battery are chopped up so I can't trace them back. This is no problem but I just want to make sure that I'm not missing something here or am unaware about some little quirk about this charging system.

Also, does anyone here have a used rebuildable carburetor for a Farmall 100 they would be interested in parting with????? ??
attached is a pic of my little puttering puppy in case you need to I.D. it.

Thanks! Pat

Pat: I have done these conversions on my SA, 130 and 140. Probably the reason you haven't found the regulator, is the current setup is a GM Delco with a built in regulator.

Do you have an original IH operator's manual for this tractor. They have an excellent diagram of the original wiring. Probably about 99% of all offset Farmall alternator conversions have been done with GM Delcos, and the reason being it is very easy and simple, and the built in regulator has proved to be a lot less troublesome. There are guys around with close to 20 years on the same alternator.

If you go to Bob M's diagrams, in the articles section on the left of this page. He has excellent diagrams for wiring up a 12volt alternator to a Farmall. It will probably say Farmall H and or M, but the same diagram will work on the smaller Farmalls. There will also be separate diagrams for mag. or distributor ign. which ever you have.

OMG!!!!! !! I'm a freaking idiot! Thanks a bunch Hugh, I'm so used to working on old Ford stuff that I never thought of the built in regulator in the Alternator! :-0

Thanks so much! Will let you know how it turns out!

Pat: If you like send me an e mail and I can return you a photo of the Delco mounted on my Super A. I just weld a flat plate on top of old generator mount, and by using a double pulley of one of the old V8 GM cars, using the outer pulley for the belt, this gives just enough clearance to set alternator back and in close to engine block. My alternators are within 1/2" of engine block. Keeps the whole project looking neat. If I were doing it over, I'd use a Toyota or Nissan alternator, just a bit smaller diameter. I think it would look even better, and with a deep pulley, one could have alternator completely under hood. If I place a straight edge along sheet metal, my Delco protrudes about 3/4". My thoughts are the Ford alternator will be larger diameter than the Delco.

I know folks doing an H's with alternator up under hood, they have trouble getting belt adjustment without Delco alternator rubbing on hood. I know the Toyota or Nissan alternator solves their problem. Just a bit smaller diameter and lots of output for the tractor.

Pat: Kind of figured that was the case. I have a son who is a Ford guy. Not sure how that happened, we never had anything but GM at home and as a teenager he worked for a guy with Dodges.

He asked me once how to fix the external regulator on his F-150. I told him to hit it with the largest hammer on the place. At least that is how I always felt about the external regulators on original 6 volt Farmalls.

OOPS, I meant to add that I can't seem to find any sets of holes where the regulator might mount so I have investigated and looked to see if it was merely just missing.
