So this weekend I try to stop by the Parts H that I am looking at getting. I lost the owner's phone number, so I wanted to let him know I bought an H and I want to buy his as well... but he wasn't home. So I stopped by the tractor Junk yeard with my son and was walking around. Tucked away was a Super AV (before they made the white "super" circle. It was in pretty good condition. So I got to thinking about buying it and restoring it. And going ahead and restoring the other H as well! And while I'm at it, starting a restoration business!...

of course I can't do ANY of that. I have no funds. No room... and I haven't even ever driven the one tractor I do own that sits 200 miles away from me!

So, I figured you people were to blame for getting me started in all this in the first place. You should all be ashamed for forcing such grandious thoughts into my head.

There, there, it"s alright. You can"t help yourself. You have been victimized. It isn"t your fault. I"m sure there is a government sponsored, money-wasting program that you can enroll in. Most likely some sort of a support group also. You didn"t mean to do it. Possibly your parents or other family members forced you to do this against your will. Threatening you if you talked about it. And of course, now that you are an adult, you have felt the need to bring this out into the open. There is help, seek it out.

Mike: Quite an assortment of opinions after 20 odd hours, kind of curious to hear Cowman's responce.

I just wanted to say, I personally know two individuals with 75+ restored Farmall tractors each. They both started off just like you, not farmers, but a farm background in both cases. One of those guys has nothing but letter series tractors, and no two are the same. The other guy has letter series along with 00 and 30-50 series. Just wanted to give you some idea what can happen.

You know Mike you are blameing the wrong people. I think it is Mr McCormick and Mr Deerings fault. If they would have built some goofy looking junk machine that would break down after a few years use none of us would be in this mess. Heck we might be buying green tractors..... naaaaa ah.

mike, i think the red tractors send out some kinda mind altering rays. i have a cub, a farmall b, an h, 3 m's, one super m, and a w-9. i also bought an old minneapolis moline big mo 500 backhoe. i still would like to get an a, a c, a w-4 and a w-6. then i would have a pretty good assortment..... though i would be missing the super series and the vegetable series....oops and then the orchard and grove tractors..... .. i need a bigger shed

Mike,
It’s great to see your enthusiasm. You’re focused on that shiny red tractor parked in the garage. I hope that once you’ve actually started working on your tractor that you find that the work is what is really the satisfying part, turning an old piece of junk into a useful machine again. If, once you’ve been through the process once, you still have the itch to do another one, then you’ll have the fever.

Mike, once you buy that second tractor it's beyond your control. You will have the fevor and there is no cure. Being broke doesn't matter, you still keep looking. Best of luck.'

Here is the best part about your affliction Mike...you started with the idea of restoring a tractor just like a close relatives. Now you covet thy AV...so the gears are turning...which leads to a second tractor...which leads to a third...and then onto implements...and the next thing you know you have a separate building to house it all and the kids have to hang out in the shop just to see their dad! That's how it works! The way I see it, you are developing nicely! :-)

Didn"t you know? Everyone on this board except you is employed by the parts vender union. Our sole purpose is to get people to spend their life savings on an endless supply of parts! LOL!

Just keep telling yourself: I NEED another H, just in case the other one goes down. And just think of all the fuel you will save by using the AV for the small jobs instead of firing up all 152 cu. in. of the H.
Get them now while you still have the chance!

I have no jobs for this tractor. It's job will be to sit in my garage and look good, until such time as I put it on a trailer and take it to a parade to pull a float. Or take it to a show.

That's it.

C"mon Mike, work with me here! What if you are ready to take the H to a parade and realize that you forgot to put Armor All on the tires, but the AV is sitting there with it"s tires already Armor All-ed. Of course you need two or more tractors- you can never have too many!
For me a lot of the fun is in finding them in some original condition and getting it home without spending a lot of $. Of course I have a farm, so that"s a good excuse, because I like to use them, but the sad thing is that the farm has progressed to the point that I need to use newer, bigger tractors for the real work. I love my H- and W-4 and W-6 and SW6TA, and 600, and..... .. See? You can never have too many.
Have you ever read one of Roger Welsh"s books? Required reading for this subject.

I own one book. Guy Fay's Originality guide. I have two more on the way. "Antique tractor bible" and "How to restore antique Farmalls" I don't know who wrote them. I never looked.

So what do you recommend from Roger Welsh?

He"s got several tractor related titles, but I think the first of them is "Old tractors and the men who love them". Not so utilitarian as your other books, but he has many entertaining and hilarious insights on just the sort of things we are discussing- how we became addicted to this hobby, the universal differences between men and women on the subject, necessities in the shop (torch set , wrenches, beer cooler....) and the adventures of working on an old tractor along with friends and neighbors.
Definetly insightful reading- check them out. Also wrote "Love, S*x, and Tractors" and "All I know about women I learned from my tractor"
I believe Ol" Rog posts over on the Allis board once in a while.

ummm, I am in the Navy, and generally when people say this sort of thing, we have a general explicitive that we use. But since you all are constitutionally sensitive farmers, I will use a farmer's term.

Allan: "Hogwash"

Should I remind you of your "Mike, go get your tractor!" thread? Coman didn't push me into this. YOU did. Against my will! I never wanted a tractor! And now look at me! I'm ruined! RUINED!!

Mike: We accept no responcibility. To start with, since I've been around here, I don't know as I've seen a newbie as excited as you about getting a tractor. We don't have any cool down regulars on this site, no provission for dealing with the addicted. Your completely on your own with the afliction.

I don't remember the exact wording of my first responce to one of your threads. I do remember, it was not all that encouraging. That didn't deter you in the least. No my friend, you were hooked before we met you.

I hope you feel very bad, because I plan to use that guilt to my advantage, and squeeze the very life out of you with an endless barrage of questions that you must cheerfully answer. So go ahead and bust out any reference material you may have on H restoration, and start brushing up.

HARDY HAR HARRRR
Join the not-so-exclusive club. I tell my wife, "At least I'm not in the tavern, or out chasing girls" (even though it might be cheaper)

There will always be that next tractor or project also. Mine will be a Super C wide front.

I don't know about the idea of a restoration business though, I always end up with more money in a tractor than what it will probably ever be worth. ;)

Enjoy yourself.

R/C is my culprit. I bought this 300 utility with a FEL to make my track with, now I think my hobby is moving...
