why dont these kits include starters? Do they just run 12v into the starter, and if so, isnt this hard on them, or are they dual rated?

Jay, When I convert I keep the old 6 volt starters and they work fine. Due to the extra kick in torque it could possibly be a lil tougher on starter drives but Ive never really had a problem, I try to avoid long crank periods. It can help on the 6 volt systems to use 00 Gauge battery n starter n ground cables and a good high rated battery.

Conversion kits don't require different starters because they simply don't need 'em! 6 volt starters live long and healthy lives on a diet of 12 volts.

In fact when an engine is well-maintained an original 6 volt starter often see LESS wear and tear when operated on 12 volts. Some of my earliest conversions - now approaching 30 years of service - are still going strong on their original 6 volt starters

Jay: I'm betting you will have less problems with that starter on 12 volt, than a 6 volt system with the generator half working, too small cables and a less that fully charged battery.

One of the biggest killers of any starter is poor power supply, low voltage and amperage.

Starters don't care if they run 6 volts or 12 volts. They just spin faster on 12 volts then they do on 6 volts. I have used 6 volt starters for year on 12 volts and as long as you don't spin them to long they will last a long time

The normal practice is to just use the 6 volt starter. They work fine and they only run for just a few seconds usually. I"ve never heard about someone burning one out or otherwise having trouble.

What the guys above said is right on but you might want to put fresh brushes and bearings/bushings in the 6V starter while you have it off if your working on it. I just yanked my old starter off and found that they were quite worn.
