Super A touch control

The touch control on my 54 super A started making funny noises every few seconds and the lift position was jerking. I had topped up the reservoir about 10 hours running time previously but it was low again. I drained about 1 quart of excess oil from the engine so I can only assume the pump is leaking into the engine oil. Is this right? The question for you good fellows is what is the procedure for removing the pump and replacing the seal. It looks like the distributor cap has to come off then remove the lines to the lift unit but then what? Does anyone know the part numbers for the seals? I do not think there is a Case IH dealer within a hundred miles of here. Thanks

I put a new seal in the pump on my '48 SA last week. It took a regular oil seal; not an O ring. The shaft was OK. I bought one at a local auto parts house. IH & pump part numbers crossed to a National Federal Mogul part #471466 that cost me only $5.00.

There are two different pumps for the Super A. All the replaceable parts for mine were less than $20 from IH.

If that shaft is worn just a little the new seal will not work. I took mine to machine shop, they built it up with some kind of process that did not require much if any heat, then turned it down to the size of the shaft where it was not worn. Worked great after that.

You wont know which type of seal you have until you take it apart. You will probably need a speedy sleeve to repait the shaft where the seal mite have worn a groove. Dont need a dealer for the parts. Any CAR QUEST or NAPA store would be able to get the seal and sleeve.

Karl: I don't know the rebuild proceedure on the pump. I know CNKS and a few others have done them. Just wanted to catch you, before you did some unessesary work. The distributor does not need to be removed. Just unbolt the steel hydraulic lines at both ends, unbolt pump and it will slide rght out.

Thanks guys. I will tackle it next weekend. Hugh, I just thought taking the cap off, not the distributor, would make it easier to wiggle the hydraulic lines clear of everything. I will let you know how I make out.

Karl: Your very likely right, if you didn't remove the cap, you'd probably have all the wires off by the time your done.

I knock on wood every time I see one of you guys rebuilding that little pump or the touch control. In 48 years I've never had either apart. I have had the pump off a couple of them, when I sent the engine for a rebuild. One of these days the laws of average will catch up with me.
