I'm going to get My M bored out to fit 4 1/8" sleeves . Can I get 4 1/8" Fire Craters for it or not. is there a better piston the the craters. Don't care for the stepped heads. My Rods take the 1.312 pin is that what I wanna stick with. Thanks a lot Mike

i don't want to step on magman's foot but the m rods are the same wrist pin as super m rods. ih didn't go to the smaller one inch wrist pin until late in the 400 series. in my red power parts book i show fire crater pistons for straight m's and 400-450's but for super m's they just offer a stephead piston. you could use the 4 1/8" firecraters in your m if you use a 400-450 gas head #362174.

Randy, I have found fire 4 1/8 crators in SM with big wrist pin. Number on piston is 374457 R1. sleeve set # 374456 R 91. They have higher peaks than standard fire crator used with 400 450 gas head.Do you show this #? Also some manuals show these pistons as having small pin but have found big pins. As far as pulling, this is just my opinion, the fire crators were sold for working tractors and wouldn't be the best if short pull is all thats used.

hi dave, i know that you can get firefrater piston sets from ih for a super m 4 1/8" overbore but they don't offer them from my 'affordable' distributor. sorry that i missed you at portland. i was very dissapointed on the lack of used ih parts dealers that were there.

Sorry I didn't understand you were refering to aftermarket. Agree on Portland, I looked at tractors and engines on display then made pass through venders and didn't buy a thing. Looked at IH tractors some more and headed for home.

I am not an exspert by anymeans on this but from past I would think you would have to go to SM rods also. If you use SM Pistons and sleeves and if the SM has a different wrist pin then it would either need special pin bushings or SM rods. But I will wait for one of the guys that really knows becuase like I said I am just going on past reading and very well could be very wrong. LOL
