A while back I bought a full set of service manual reprints from a well known dealer online. They were listed as "826" manuals but when I recieved them they were marked as either "706, 806 or 1206" or "756, 856 or 1256."

Upon reciept of the manuals I called and was assured they were "totally applicable," but I have learned that this was an optimistic comment at best, or a bold-faced lie at worst. I have found many differences between my 826 and these other models. A few similarities too, but these manuals have not benefitted most of the work done lately. I've had to use either the cheesy I&T manual or wing it. Pretty sad when an 8 dollar manaul is of more use than a $200 stack. Of the stack I bought, only the D-358 manual is totally applicable to my tractor. I hate working in the dark and I despise people who turn the lights off on me just to make a buck! I don't mind spending the money, but I want what I paid for.

My question is to those that may have bought manuals recently for 826s. Who is selling "real" 826 manuals at a decent price? I've just started shopping again, and I'm willing to do my legwork, but figured I'd query the brain trust to save a few steps and a bit of time. Many thanks!

Jim, I mostly get by with the I&T book, but I agree with you, for the most part the only useful info it gives you is torque specs, clearances, ect. If you look around on e-bay long enough, you may find the old original IH Blue Ribbon books, but unfortunatly, you often need several of them for each model. The engine would be covered in one book, the TA in another, the PTO unit in another, and so on. Your best bet would be to go to your nearest Case-IH dealer and order a brand new service manual. Like the Vet says, for the most part info for one model will work just fine for another of the same vintage. That's OK if you've been around these machines for years. However, for example, if you don't know that a quite a few of the hydraulic pressures differ from somthing small and early like a 706 to somthing big and late like a 1456, you could end up chasing after a problem that doesen't exist.

Tractor Vet: I found differences in the brakes, the diff lock, the remotes, the clutch, and a few other things I don't recall at the moment. Some of it's subtle, other stuff is fairly easy to figure out, but the point is that I didn't get what I paid for. What the I&T manual covers shows just what I have, so I know the manuals are (were) produced.

As to not being brain surgery, I agree. But there's right and wrong ways to do things and if you've never seen any of it before... whaddaya gonna do? Mainly, I don't want to have to do things twice just for the learning curve. My background is in cars and trucks. Electronic fuel injection is easy stuff to me, but I wouldn't expect a guy who's whiz-bang on old tractor stuff to necessarily be able to jump into that willy-nilly. The two skill sets share many common foundations, but without training and experience, all you've got is a (correct) manual to start from. Or trial and error, wasted money and downtime.

I will agree that when ya buy something that someone clams to be this and ya get that the hair on the back of my neck stands stright up . as i have been there and done that even got that treatment from one of my use to be old supplyiers On a new radaitor that i waited on for three months and when it came guess what it did not fit and according to THERE books it was what the doctor ordered and when asked why it would not fit they tell me that oh well it won't fit them and they would not make good so guess what they no longer did the 15- 3000 a month business with me any more and when about three months later they called and wanted to know why i had not placed and order with them in awhile i told them that it was because of that rad. deal and i would no longer buy there JUNK so that 200 dollar rad. cost them big time . OH well . But if ya run into a problem that ya can't figure out let me know .

Tractor Vet: I can speak for many people, as well as myself, that we appreciate your timely responses to tech questions. It's great to have people on the board who have "been there-done-that" and who we can ask silly questions of.

Don't worry! I will shamelessly pick your brains... like the buzzard that is just now picking the carcass of the groundhog I shot yesterday! "I appreciate the help," said Jim and the buzzard.

I'll have to go searching for the link, but you can buy the manuals you need online directly from Case-IH corporate. I'll see if I can find the link.
