Leaky Carb quick fix?

My carb leaks gas out of the big open hole in the back of it. When I look at some pictures of restored tractors I see that there is supposed to be a hose connected to that port horizontally that comes out and bends up vertically and disappears under the hood.

I haven't been able to afford all the manuals yet, so I don't have anything to tell me what that hose is for. All I know is it is not on MY tractor. I don't want gas to leak out of there, as I will be driving onto the trailer, and then off and into my garage.

So, can I get this hose and hook it up to stop the leak? What is that big hose? Why is there fuel leaking into it?

I had the same problem on my ih 300 utility. I just split the carb and flushed the float valve with carb cleaner and it stop sticking. I could tell it was sticking because when i lifted and let the float go, the actuator would be delayed in following the movement of the float. Only problem now is my carb gasket leaks a hair, but i shut the fuel valave off after im done, so no biggie. I might get around to getting a new gasket, but for now more important things need tending to.

That hose if for the air cleaner. It goes from the carb up to the aircleaner and even if its there it will not stop your problem and might even cause you bigger problems. Your problem is that the float/needle isn't working as it should be and you will need to rebuilt the carb, but the quick fix is easy. Turn off the gas under the tank when your not running the engine. Problem solved. Common problem with tractors is just what you have and its common to turn the gas off so it doesn't happen. Shoot out of my 20 or so running tractors about 3/4 of them have the gas shoot off unless I'm running them

Hi Mike, It doesent take much more than a speck of dirt in the needle valve to hold it open and make it leak as yours is. Like you I recently purchased an old H, this one had been sitting under some trees for about a year not running at all. I got it home, put in some fresh gas and it started after about five turns. Gas was pouring out of everywhere, but it ran....For about five minutes. Took the glass bowl off the fuel strainer, there was an inch of muck in it.Cleaned it out , put it back on still nothing, no gas coming out of the line. Next, took the fuel strainer off the tank, there were leaves sticking out of the tank, started pulling out the leaves and mud started dribbling out. Long story short, cleaned out tank, replaced leaky fuel strainer, cleaned out gas line with some spray brake cleaner, took the carb apart and blasted it out with the brake cleaner, put it back together with Clean gas and it does not leak a drop anymore.I noticed from your pictures it looks like your old girl has been sitting too. Spend a little time cleaning out the old stuff, And get your air cleaner cleaned out and hooked up, You might be surprised how a little time will help the H run great. Mine went from leaky sputter to stump puller with a couple hours and about $20.00. Where about are you in ca? I'm in the desert, east of palmdale.....Tom

I live in Hanford, but am waiting to move into my new house in Visalia, just south of Fresno.

Yeah, my old boy (His name is Oscar... he will have his own website shortly: www.oscarfarmall.com ) has been sitting out for some time. No muffler on it, so I'm worried about what got into the exhaust manifold. I just need to get him home so I can take him completely apart clean, overhaul, and paint the living daylights out of him. I'll have him up to Show Tractor status by April for the Tulare show.

April 2010. :-\
