I have a Galion 503 motor grader with an IH UB220 industrial motor. The carb is giving me fits. I either need a replacement carb or a rebuild kit.

The machine has been sitting a while and is a little rough. I am leaning toward replacing the carb as there is quite a bit of pitting in the bore for the accelerator pump (and in other parts as well) - don't know if it will really matter, but I don't think I can get a good seal, even with an overhaul kit.

Suggestions for parts? Bates Corp? Others?

Thanks, Tip

NAPA is usually pretty good at carb kits. Kind of pricey though. Just got one for the 73 pickup, & it was $37. I'm afraid they will keep going higher. AS far as a replacement carb, try a truck / car junk yard.

The UB-220 would appear to be a version of the BD-220 truck engine, IIRC. What kind of carb do you have, updraft or downdraft? The downdraft truck motors used Carter [735S/735SA], Holley[1904], and Zenith [don't know Zenith model numbers] carbs at one time or another, so if it's a downdraft, first step is to determine which carb you have. Since you mention an accelerator pump, I'm assuming the carb is a downdraft.

In the Metro vans, the trucks used an updraft carbs...but I'm not familiar with what make carb it was. But I'm pretty sure you'll have to determine the carb manufacturer in order to insure you get the right parts.

Sorry about that - it is a Rochester downdraft? Go figure. I need to grab a part number off of it.

Thanks, Tip
